The people in the photograph are Thea Manson and Terry Ryan, who was stud-groom at Springfield Poll Herefords in Finley NSW.This item is a part of a larger collection of 4,500 Frank Johnson photographs and negatives donated to Melbourne Royal by Frank Johnson’s daughter, Francis Beatty Wallace in 2016. This collection spanning from the 1930s to the 1980s holds important social and historical significance in preserving and sharing Victoria’s agricultural history and community. The photographs capture the local, regional, and state’s shared relationships developed through agriculture and the importance of farming and husbandry to the population and development of Australia. A large proportion of these photographs depict events from the Royal Melbourne Show, including livestock competitions, exhibitions and awards ceremonies. ... sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals ...The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). It shows what sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals the popularity of rifle shooting in Warrnambool in earlier decades, with two clubs existing at that timeThis is a sports trophy cup made of electro-plated nickel silver (now very tarnished). In the 1950s speedboat racing was popular at Paynesville and Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club have loaned the trophies of the time to PMM to display. The evening competition often ...These seven photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Laverton in 1967. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. This is a set of six photographs of an Army Survey Regiment inter-squadron athletics competition held at Epsom, Bendigo in 1982. Personnel from Headquarters, Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons took part in traditional athletics events, wheelbarrow race, sack race, fireman’s carry and tug-of-war novelty events. Photo .1P caption: FORTUNA RECORDS TUMBLE. ‘Super Sapper Annette Wilson of Air Survey Squadron broke a total of 4 records at the Army Svy Regt annual athletics carnival. She bettered the shot put by an amazing 5.10 metres, while also creating new records for the long jump, discus and javelin. The evening competition often ...These five photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio in November 1984, 1985, and 1988. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The “O.H.A.R.A Rock” seen in photo 6276.2P was awarded to PTE Zahra for the lowest score in rifle shooting. He had to lug it with him for the rest of the evening. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous.
