Melbourne Legacy
Document, History of Legacy 1946 (H19), 1946
A document summarising events significant to Legacy in the year 1946. With the return to peacetime the question of eligibility arose. The fundamental rule on which Legacy was based 'that of honourable service overseas' was clear cut in the case of the 1914-1918 war 'but much more difficult to define in the many and varied fields of service in the war which commenced in 1939'. Discussions were continued through the war at Annual Conferences. Many members believed that membership should be open to 'any male person who served as a member of the Forces of the British Empire irrespective of whether or not overseas service was involved'. And a resolution was passed at the 18th Annual Conference in Adelaide in 1946. Similar discussions of eligibility of Junior Legacy benefits was also discussed and definitions evolved. There was an increased need to help young widows with young children. First mention of the need to have a 'toddler home' for children from age 3 to 8. A property was acquired in Balcombe road with donation from the Trustees of 'Blamey House' - a war time hostel for servicemen which was being wound up and balance of funds being donated to Legacy. (Property acquired was 'Mossgiel' in Balcombe rd but renamed Blamey house due to the terms of the donation). Also the former Red Cross property of 'Stanhope' was made ready for the first residents welcomed in December 1946. Dureau House was under 'constant consideration'. (It seems the Dental Clinic was transferred here and there other part made available to the Melbourne Technical College - but in the 1950s it was still not suitable for Legacy's headquarters and sold). Classes during the war had been difficult to find suitable halls, and 43 Market St was still being used by the Air Force. A superannuation scheme was instituted for the Legacy staff. The notation H18 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A report covering the main work of Legacy in 1946.White foolscap paper with black type x 5 pages of the achievements of Legacy in 1946.Handwritten 'H19' in red pen.history, annual summary -

Document - Speech, 24th Battalion (Gallipoli). Address by Frank Doolan (H27), 1970
A copy of an address given to a Legacy luncheon by Legatee Frank Doolan. He speaks of the 24th Battalion and their role at Gallipoli and in France. The story of the withdrawal from Gallipoli is interesting. Legatees Savige and HC Brinsmead were two of the three last lieutenants on the peninsula. Both were foundation members as was John Anderson who was also mentioned. He digresses to relate a story of an evening when he was with a 'VC mate' (assumed to be L/ Donovan Joynt) and they decided to speak to the editor of the Argus, Allan Spowers, about the newspaper's stance against the building of the Shrine of Remembrance. He related the paper published an article two days later in favour of the Shrine project and shortly after so did 'The Age'. The address also relates the return to war in 1939 and the formation of the 2/24th and it fighting in Tobruk. It was absorbed into the 9th division and later a new 2/24th was formed to wear the 'Red and White Diamond'. 'This unit consisted of younger men who had served with the CNF between the wars and included several sons of Legatees and several Junior Legatees. Our President Don, was attached for a short time.' (referring to L/ Don Simonson who was president in 1970). It went on to fight in New Guinea. Legatee Doolan's aim had been to link the 24th battalion with Legacy and suggests the book about the history of the 24th Battalion by Bob Serle was worth reading. He then introduced two other speakers, Squadron Leader Hicks, Conductor of the Royal Australian Air Force Band and Mr John Anderson of AWA. From the speakers record this event was in June 1970. The notation H27 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Legatee Frank Doolan was part of the archive project around the 1970s.A significant account of the withdrawal from Gallipoli and other experiences of the 24th Battalion retold at a Legacy luncheon. Speakers at Legacy luncheons were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken on were many and varied. Photo of Fred Bush on Anzac Day 1987. His medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal. It is assumed Fred Bush was a Legatee. Was found in an envelope marked "For Melbourne Legacy. Anzac Day Parade featuring Legacy Lads.' From his medals it appears he served in the RAF in UK during World War 2 as he has the Europe Air Crew Star. He has a New Zealand War Service medal (on black and white ribbon on far right of photo), which implies he might have originally been from New Zealand. According to Forces War Records UK, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is awarded to Officers and Warrant officers for "an act or acts of valour and courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy". The Distinguished Flying Medal was the other ranks' equivalent to the Distinguished Flying Cross.A record of Legatees marching on Anzac Day and that their medals show a history of distinguished service.Photo of Fred Bush with his medals on Anzac Day 1987.Handwritten on the back 'Fred Bush Anzac Day '87 DFC, DFM' in black pen.anzac day, march, fred bush -

In the dark and uncertain days of 1941 and 1942, when Rommel's tanks were sweeping towards Suez, a handful of daring raiders were making history for the Allies. They operated deep behind the German lines, often driving hundreds of miles through the deserts of North Africa. They hid by day and struck by night, destroying aircraft, blowing up ammunition dumps, derailing trains, and killing many times their own number. These were the SAS, Stirling's desert raiders, the brainchild of a deceptively mild-mannered man with a brilliant idea. Small teams of resourceful, highly trained men would penetrate beyond the front lines of the opposing armies and wreak havoc where the Germans least expected it.Index, ill, p.352.non-fictionIn the dark and uncertain days of 1941 and 1942, when Rommel's tanks were sweeping towards Suez, a handful of daring raiders were making history for the Allies. It was at the “Schloss Cecilienhof” (Cecilienhof Palace) that Churchill, Truman and Stalin met from June 17 to August 2, 1945, for the Potsdam Conference. Cecilienhof Palace in the New Garden was the last Hohenzollern palace, built for the crown prince during the years 1913-1917. The end of monarchy in 1918 was another hard blow for the town, which so far was shaped by the Royal Court, garrison and administration. During the night of April 14, 1945, a British air raid destroyed large parts of the inner city of Potsdam. Battles against Soviet military units during the last days of April 1945 caused still more and heavy damages. The parks and their palaces remained almost unscathed. After the war ended, from the end of July until the beginning of August 1945, the Potsdam Agreement was negotiated and signed between Churchill, Truman and Stalin in Cecilienhof Palace. http://www.historicgermany.travel/historic-cities/potsdam/history Colour photograph of, Cecilienhof Palace, Potsdampotsdam -

Booklet - Hamilton-Smith Collection Air Raid Precautions Booklet, T. Rider - Government Printer, September 1939
The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This Air Raid Precautions booklet was one of thousands distributed to households across Australia during WW2. They provided instructions on what to do during an air raid and were based on emergency response protocols established in Britain. Other measures adopted by State Governments during this period included the installation of air raid sirens and bomb shelters, and the training of volunteers in firefighting and first aid. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of life in Australia during WW2. A small booklet containing illustrations and text instructing people what to do during an air raid. Book - Airmen I have Met - Their Stories, Derrick Rolland, 1999
... way, made a contribution to our wealth of aviation history ...This book includes biographies of 16 different airmen with whom the compiler has come in contact. They have had their own uniques experiences in aviation. 12 of them served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). One of the aviators featured in this publication is Joe Drage, Born on 10 July 1931 in Walwa, Joseph Gordon (Joe) Drage operated a timber mill and earthmoving business, but his great passion was aviation. After obtaining his pilot’s licence at the age of 19, Mr. Drage set about buying vintage aircraft that he feared would be sold overseas. He bought his first aircraft, a Tiger Moth in 1965. In 1972 he established Drage Historical Aircraft Museum on about 60 ha of land in Wodonga, with 5 planes. Over time this grew to 21 planes which Joe maintained so that they were all in flying order. His museum was the location for several air shows which included fly-ins by members of the Antique Aeroplane Association. The land occupied by the Museum was compulsorily acquired by the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation and Wangaratta council bought the aircraft collection for about $2 million. They opened Drage Airworld in 1984. The cost of maintaining the collection became too much for the council which closed it down in 2002. Joe Drage died on 9 August 2017.This publication has a hard cover with a dust jacket.
