Tool, Chaff Cutter
Chaff Cutters were devices used by farmers to cut hay or wheat into smaller pieces for animal feed by pushing the feed through the rotating metal gears in the mouth of the device and cranking the bladed wheel to cut the feed as it is pushed through. This chaff cutter would was used by Doctor Murphy. This device was manufactured by a Dutch company and has been in use since before 1940s.This object is significant as it can allow for insight into how farmers lived their day-to-day lives in the Emerald area in the early to mid 1900s.Small metal chaff cutter. Device featuring a large metal wheel with blades on the inside structures. Handheld crank on outside of wheel. Gears in the mouth of the device adjacent to wheel. In 1852 Bosisto opened Australia’s first commercial eucalyptus oil distillery, at Dandenong Creek in Victoria, followed by others at Emerald, Menzies Creek and Macclesfield. and began selling the oil locally. Eucalyptus oil was used as a liniment. Bosisto's bottles were generally used for eucalyptus oil. the eucalyptus oil industry was a significant early Victorian industry. Bosisto's products were commoly used in households of the first half of the 20th century. A flat-sided, brown, glass bottle with a threaded top. The card was probably sent as a Christmas gift to an unknown recipient by "H & GB", presumably a married couple. The two women in the photo might be known to sender and receiver, or might even be the receivers. The scene is suspected to be in the grounds of the Country Club at Emerald, Victoria.As the card is clearly dated, and the figures clearly named, it is a record of people resident in Emerald. From it we can make out some details of their dress and the physical surroundings of the time.B/W photograph mounted on embossed cardboard with crimped edges. It depicts two women standing on a small bridge over a creek in dense vegetation. There are trees in the background and ferns in the foreground. This is a copy of a photograph of the Ormond College Crew in 1931. The photograph shows Dr Ian Murphy in his youth as the Cox of the rowing team. The Cox was an important role that coached, steered, and ensured the safety of the crew.Dr Murphy was Emerald's first and much-loved GP. His work for the community over 34 years was of immense benefit. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for his service to the health of the community.
