A song composition by Helen Ellis, of Kew, first known to have been performed in 1942 at the BBC for the 'Shipmates Ashore Programme it was then published 1943. A copy of this song and one other composition the composer Helen Ellis is held by the National Library of Australia. Promotional text also indicates that the song was performed by the notable Australian singer Peter Dawson. The song "The M.N. ships get through" carries an important acknowledgement of the oft forgotten vital role of the Merchant Navy as carrier of goods and supplies, and especially so in wartime. The publication is of special significance to the MTSV as an example of the many skilled and creative women who have supported the Missions to seafarers.Commercially printed single fold music score for a 2 verse song and chorus. Front cover with blue band at top and lower edge features the Merchant Navy insignia at top left with depiction in half tone blue of a Merchant ship convoy and at right a sketched depiction of head and shoulders of a Merchant Navy officer with binoculars in hand. Music score and full text printed on p.2 and 3. The back cover features text of chorus and a handwritten notation in blue ink with reference to performance of the song on a BBC programme, 'Shipmates Ashore'.Back cover-handwritten notation in blue ink: "Sung by Raymond ?(indecipherable) in the B.B.C. London / 'Shipmates Ashore' programme,1942." This inscription is found after the printed sample of chorus words accredited to Helen Ellis, Central Club, Victoria, Mission to Seamen. A Wotjobaluk woman, born in Melbourne in the sixties, adopted into a non-Aboriginal family and raised by true destiny on country in the Wimmera. leni was reunited with her mother and extended family in her late teens. Simple swift sentences with complex challenging undertones. Thus began an ever evolving and endlessly deep cultural and personal exploration which has passionately consumed, confused, enticed and enriched her since. leni’s creativity is inspired strongly by her cross cultural heritage, learnings and loves, failures and fears, passions and dreamings. This artwork has its own determination and authenticity. leni’s work constantly explores concepts of the past and present. leni has exhibited in the Koorie Heritage Trust, The Convent Gallery, Kirret Barreet Gallery, Gallery on Sturt, Tussock Gallery and others. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interestHelen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS. Mrs Nance Blackman’s notes in 1978 for the Centenary of The Cheltenham Church of Christ.. The Blackman family were early settlers in Moorabbin Shire. 5 x A4 paper printed on 1 side Issue 22 of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Mrs Helen Stanley in June 2011. Notice of meeting June 26th and CMHS members exhibited some artefacts at the ‘Fun4over50’s’ event at Kingston (Moorabbin ) Town Hall June 5th. Glen Eira City Council Building Dept. Officers inspected erosion along the North side of the Barn floor, members have planted seedlings in the garden and Helen and Joan are entering data about our ‘Collection’ onto the MAV website while Jim Dale has photographed some of the farm machinery. Small paragraphs about early local Religious groups – Salvation Army, Methodist and Presbyterian Ministries – with 2 photocopied photographs. HMS Susan sailed from the Port of London on the 23rd September 1835. She carried 394 male convicts and a guard of officers and 30 rank and file of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) regiment, arriving in Sydney on 8th February 1836. Samuel Windridge, who was born in Warwickshire in 1817, was a Private in the Regiment on board the ‘Susan’. He served in various places: Sydney, Moreton Bay (Brisbane) and Port Phillip (Melbourne). He was discharged from the Regiment in 1842 with the rank of Sergeant. After his marriage he settled in Victoria and by 1852 he was often in charge of the gold escort from Bendigo. In 1854 he retired from the Gold Commission and settled in Kyneton. In 1860 the Kyneton Mounted Rifle Corps was formed with Samuel Windridge as one of its earliest members. In 1862 the ladies of Kyneton presented a standard to the Rifle Corps. In 1976 the Shire of Kyneton presented the Kyneton Colours to the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment Museum. In 1862 the whole of the Victorian Horse was amalgamated into one Regiment: The Prince of Wales Light Horse. Samuel Windridge rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Kyneton Troop of the regiment. He died in 1896, aged 79 years, This painting is a gift from his Great Grand-daughters Mrs Mary Hopper and Miss Jean Baldwin. Framed reproduction of painting of HMS Susan.
