Worn by VX45541 Lieutenant Louis A Jackson who served with 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. Following its return from New Guinea in 1944, 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment had a change of role and was redesignated Numbers 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies and served in Pacific Islands till the end of the war. In 1948, Louis Jackson joined the Citizen Forces (CMF) and served as a captain in the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. This object is well provenance and, in its condition and completeness, is a fine example of unusual headgear worn by Australian armoured corps soldiers in World War 2 (39-45).Khaki heavy cloth beret with 'Rising Sun' badge and 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment colour patch.beret, hat, jackson, 2nd/8th armoured regiment

George Bailey Jackson enlisted in the AIF No 2172 on 16.11.1914 in the 300th Mechanical Transport ASC (17th Divisional Ammunition Column 9th Army Service Corp age 25 years 1 month. This part and his records are confusing. Embarks 22.12.1914 (does not state where to) Embark 9.7.1915 from Southampton and disembarks at Rouen France 10.7.1915. He marries Louisa Jane Hobbs in England on 5.1 1916. ( Australian Divisions have not arrived in France at this time) from then on it states he transfers to the 1st Aust Div Supply Column then later No 1 Aust Div Motor Transport Coy. Herb Jackson. Herb served in the RAF in Bomber Command WW2. After the War Herb came to Australia and soon joined the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. He was very active in Both Appeals each year and did so for 70 years. On 4th August 1978 the construction of the Goonawarra Housing Estate commenced. The estate was formerly known as the Goonawarra Farm and overloked the Sunbury town area and Jacksons Creek valley. Plans for the new development included a gold course, housing, community and recreational facilities.
