The Daylesford Uniting Church (formerly Wesleyan /Methodist Church) was built in 1865, replacing an earlier Wesleyan Chapel built in 1861 which is still on site and known as the Sunday School (2024). The foundaton stone for the newer, current church was laid on 12 June 1865, designed by Architects Crouch and Wilson the structure was built in early English Gothic style. The first service was held in the new church on 10 December 1865. It is of interest for its brick broach spire, diapered brick façade and spacious interior with aisles separated from the nave by slender columns. The church organ was installed and built in 1888 by William Anderson and boasts an impressive 724 pipes, many of which are decorated with Christian symbols. This organ is a rare example of Anderson’s work and is his only instrument in Western Victoria. It is classified by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) as being of state significance. The organ was renpvated in 1979-80 by Leighton Turner. It has 2 manuals, 14 speaking stops, 3 couplers, tracker action, Gt: 8.8 divided.8.4.4.2-2/3.2. Sw: 8.8.4.2.8. Ped: 16. In the 1880s the decline in mining led to the congregation considering ways to reduce debt. Rent was received from pew hire as well as organ concerts and annual fairs. By the end of the 19th century the church had settled into a pattern of steady parish life. The 1950s and 1960s were really the glory days of the church with an active Sunday School, tennis clubs and vibrant social activity as well as many worshippers at Sunday services. The final service was held at the church on 21 April 2024.A small hall in the grounds of Daylesford Uniting Church. John Mitchell was a teacher and superintendent from September 1861 to 1921. Ceramic - Artwork- Ceramic, Blue Goblet by John O'Loughlin
John O'LOUGHLIN Born Snowtown, South Australia In 1980 John O'Loughlin's life changed when he started wheel throwing ceramic vessels. During this time he discarded the superfluous and unnecessary clutter collected on the journey of life, yet retaining the essence of what mattered to him. John O’Loughlin's later artworks engages with the way in which organised religion, specifically the Catholic Church, deals with the translation of the spiritual into the material. Informed by his extensive travels and studies, O’Loughlin’s ceramics reference the reliquaries and church artefacts that connect the life of this world with that of faith in another world. Completing undergeduate and post graduate works at Federation University John O'Loughlin's honours thesis was entitled "Ways and Means of Meaning, The Use of Symbol and Surface as Expressive Media in Ceramic Sculpture". The University provided a serious ceramic studio equipped with all the research tools for advanced ceramic exploration. Access to raw materials and a variety of kilns combined with excellent lecturers, mentors and technicians inspired, motivated and challenged him to push his accumulating knowledge to higher levels. O'Loughlin's working method in the studio is one of quiet, determined interaction with clay, idea and content. Experimentation with a variety of temperatures, firing methods and atmospheric conditions has produced a broad tonal and textural palette. He has worked with various clay bodies overlaid with coloured oxides, slips and engobes as the foundation for many of his works. O'Loughlin ufilised raised surfaces from old cemetery tombstones using the impressed forms and textures in his constructions. This research led him to the use of dry engobes to create a sense of antiquity, with crusty and distressed surfaces that resemble objects neglected in the oceans. These objects seem covered with the accretions and accumulations of history when re-discovered and brought to the surface as miraculous objects of mystery and magic. Clothing - Two Piece White Satin & Lace Wedding Dress, Mme Pamely, c.1900
This wedding dress was made for an unknown customer by a late 19th and early 20th century Richmond dressmaker known by her married name as Mrs Pamely. The dressmaker’s name is identified on Petersham ribbon on the bodice. (1877 was the first known use of a dressmaker’s name on a dress in Australia). The dress entered the Collection by donation. The donor, Netta Fuller, and her husband Alec, were long-term residents of Kew. In 1985, Netta Fuller and Elizabeth Pace launched a parade of garments sponsored by Kew Historical Society at Holy Trinity Church, Kew. The parade was called 'Downunder Dressmakers' and included a collection of over fifty items of clothing dating from 1800 to 1984. The core of the parade consisted of a collection of 19th Costumes worn by the ancestors of a Miss Gertrude Murray, a resident of Blackburn. In sourcing items for her collections, Netta Fuller collected costumes stored in old trunks and wardrobes, or even purchased from opportunity shops. Not satisfied with purchasing authentic costumes of the period, she also used these as models for artistic recreations. Following her retirement from both collecting and exhibiting, Netta Fuller donated a number of 19th Century items of clothing to the Kew Historical Society. Some garments were parts of costumes such as bodices, while others were complete outfits. Many of the latter exhibit signs of old damage, however very few of the costumes have been modified to enable them to be worn in exhibitions. Known provenance is limited to donor information, although some of these donations may have originally formed part of the collection owned by the Murray family. While the costumes are old and therefore historic, provenance is less important than the representativeness and or rarity of the costumes. Similarly, the costumes need to be evaluated as a group and separately, considering their aesthetic and artistic significance. This is the only 19th century costume in the Collection where the maker's name and address is known. To date, no other costumes by this dressmaker have been identified. The maker's business activity (1888-1905) allow one to, with an assessment of style, be relatively certain about its late Victorian construction. This adds to the item's significance even though its condition has been compromised by later removals and additions of decorative fabric on the bodice.Cream satin wedding dress comprised of a fitted bodice and a full skirt with a long wide train. Both the skirt and the bodice feature extensive use of ruched silk. Originally the bodice was covered with silk net embroidered with small white flowers. While sections of the net remain on the rear of the bodice (and on the sleeves), that on the front has been removed, probably due to damage. The name of the dressmaker is stamped on Petersham ribbon on the bodice."Madame Pamely, Costumiere, 41 Stanley St. Richmond"wedding dresses, australian fashion - 19th century, women's clothing, dressmakers - richmond (vic), netta fuller, fashion manufacturers - mrs pamely -

Drawing - Property Illustration, Margaret Picken, 9 John Street, Kew, 2000
After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. Each work is signed and dated by the artist.Gift of Margaret Picken, 2020Pen and ink architectural drawing on drafting film of 9 John Street, Kew by Margaret Picken.9 JOHN ST., KEW / MARGARET PICKEN is the @ 2000 / WOODARDS ~ HAWTHORNartist -- margaret picken 1950-, architectural drawings -- houses -- kew (vic.), 9 john street kew (vic) -
