Robert WHITSON (1962- ) Born Mortlake, Victoria Robert Whitson studied Fine Art at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) from 1980 to 1983, returning to undertake Honours. He completed a Masters degree in 2002 at the University of Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed artwork which forms part of the Robert Whitson's Masters folio "Sacred Landscape: An Unsettling". The project was concerned with a visial exploration of the land of the Western Plains of Victoria and the nature of 'the sacred' in the landscape. Western Aranda artist, Gerhard Inkamala. Born in 1917, Gerhard was the nephew of Albert Namatjira and grew up being inspired by his artwork and the surrounding landscapes. He became a skilled artist and during the 1940s was one of the founders of the famous Hermannsburg School of Art. In the 1950s Gerhard and his brother Adolf were included in a group exhibition in Alice Springs at the home of Rex Battarbee who was the Warrnambool-born art teacher of Albert Namatjira. He died in 1977.A landscape scene showing the Australian outback. Trees and shrubs in the foreground with rocky hills in the background. The foreground is an ochre/orange colour and the hills and rocks in the background are a blue/grey colour. The sky is clear and blue. Signed bottom right. The Garden of the Grieving Mother is an acknowledgement of the trauma, grief and anxiety felt by the families of Australian servicemen and women. Of the 3,801 WWI service men and women commemorated in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, 1 in 5 made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives. At the centre of the memorial space is a bronze sculpture of a mother clutching a photograph of her son by sculptor Peter Corlett who has created many war memorial public artworks.
