In 1914, Frederick C Drake opened Mitcham's first estate agency in a red brick office building on the corner of Station Street and Colombo Street, Mitcham.. In 1926 Norman Armstrong took over the business but retained the original name. The earliest Methodist Church was on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Richards Street, Mitcham. In 1912 the church was removed to a site in Mitcham Road, just north of Whitehorse Road. By 1967 most of their buildings had been moved to the Presbyterian site on the corner of Whitehorse and Doncaster East Roads, Mitcham. In the mid 1950's Masonite built a hard board plant at Eildon but the process could not be made to work satisfactorily on the eucalypt woods available. CSR took over the Masonite Corporation in 1959, closing down it Eildon plant and constructing plants at Bacchus Marsh and Mitcham which began producing in 1961. With the development of particledboard manufacture in the 1960's the fibreboard industry declined. (See also NP262 ) Black and white photo of Mitcham Post Office, NE corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street. Has been site of Mitcham PO for many years - built in 1924. Following the death of Bertha Markham, Postmistress, in 1944, the building was not a PO; it resumed that function in mid 1957: between 1944 and 1957, the post office location was on the same block several buildings to the east of the current site. This building was also the home of Mary Millane (daughter of Bertha Markham) who operated a mixed business here and her husband Harold conducted a studio photographic business from these premises. The Millane family sold the premises to the PMG and vacated the premises in June, 1957, at which time it resumed service as the Mitcham Post Office.mitcham post office

The Brittania Mall was part of a $5 million development of the Mitcham Shopping centre, begun in 1986. It affected both Edward Street and Brittania Street, part of which had to be re-routed. The guide hall in Brittania Street was removed to Halliday Park Mitcham. Shops on Western side of Britannia Street are located on the site of Barelli's shop, dwelling and bakehouse. To the north of these buildings and across a cobblestone lane now called Enterprise Way was the Salvation Army Citadel, .a further commercial building housing a printer. Erection of this building necessitated demolition of Barelli's stable and reclamation of its horseyard.
