Photograph (black & white), Ballarat School of Mines Students visit the New Normanby Mine, 1899, 1899
In 1875 John Rowe enrolled at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) where he studied Metallurgy and Assaying. In 1880 the Britannia Mine closed and John Rowe moved to Launceston working as Manager of the Royal Tasman Gold Mining Company. He returned to Ballarat two years later to manage the Long Gully United Gold Mining Company. In 1885 John Rowe sought work in New Caledonia followed by South Africa. While in South Africa he received an offer from SMB to lecture in Practical Mining, an instructional innovation which involved weekly visits to some of the principle mines in the district. John Rowe took up this position in 1994, but it appears to have been a short lived innovation ending in 1996, possibly due to John Rowe's failing health. Photograph, Surrey Hills Station and car park
There are 3 tracks; the third track was built in 1971, which gives an approximate date for the photo. At this time the original station buildings were demolished and replaced by buildings constructed from concrete bricks and a second subway replaced the overhead footbridge. According to Roderick Smith, a local railway enthusiast, originally there had been 3 railway houses at the Mont Albert end of the northern car park. These were demolished to extend the car park. Certainly 8 Bedford Avenue, built as the station master's house was demolished at this time. The palm tree had been planted in the station master's front garden and was retained in a small garden bed within the car park. A black and white photograph of a station with cars parked on both sides of the 3 tracks. A Harris train is departing the station heading towards Mont Albert. A palm tree is prominent in the station car park to the north.1971, surrey hills station, railway stations, car parks, public transport, trains, railway lines, palm tree -

Digital photo, John Turnbull and John Garzoli, First Communion, 1951, 1951
There was a Garzoli family living at 116/118 Windsor Crescent in the 1930s and still there in 1954; there was another Garzoli family also at 18 Windsor Crescent in 1954.This is one of a series of photos that document John Turnbull’s First Communion. They are representative of this important rite of passage in the Catholic Church in the 1950s. The sacrament of First Communion is an important tradition for Catholic families and individuals. Originally this was celebrated when a child was 10, 12 or even 14 years of age, however in 1910, Pope Pius X issued the decree Quam singulari, which changed the age at which First Communion is taken to 7 years old. Traditions of celebration surrounding First Communion usually include family gatherings and parties to celebrate the event. The first communicant wears special clothing. The clothing is often white to symbolize purity. It is more elaborate for girls but boys wear ‘Sunday best’; it could be a suit and tie or even a tuxedo. Many families have formal professional photographs taken in addition to candid snapshots in order to commemorate the event and some churches arrange for a professional photographer to attend after the ceremony. A black and white photo of 5 boys taken on the occasion of their First Communion. They are all wearing white shirts with ties. The boy on the RHS is also wearing a badge. They are seated at a table laiden with 'party food'. There are 2 girls in the background. On rear in black biro in John Turnbull's writing:"FIRST COMMUNION 1951 / ME - 2ND IN FROM LEFT / I THINK LAD ON FAR / RIGHT IS JOHN GARZOLI"catholic church, first communion, john turnbull, john gazoli, our holy redeemer church, surrey hills -

Built for a client by Albert Harbert in the 1920s. Albert built many local homes. This is a fine example of its style with double gables and return verandah. A black and white photograph of a weatherboard Californian Bungalow style house with a tiled roof. It has an L-shaped verandah with solid pillars decorated with stucco which is also on the chimney. The weatherboards are decoratively notched and the upper sections of the grouped windows have diamond panes. Framed by a woven wire fence along the street frontage.
