This pin cushion was in use when home spun "fashion" clothing was manufactured or altered. When this item was used it was in a period when distances from haberdashery stores was too far and mail ordered clothing would take weeks to arrive.The ability to make and alter clothing for families within the Kiewa Valley and its regions was a domestic requirement up until the later period(1960's onwards)This pin cushion, although rarely used in the 21st Century, with the availability of "cheap" throw away clothes, was very important to a well run rural household. The emphasis for girls to be able to sew and repair clothing was generated by mothers and continued at high schools. Part of the role of women(in this time frame) within the family was to manufacture children's clothing and adjust the growing waistline of their men folk. This item is very significant to the rural households in the Kiewa Valley because of the relative isolation of the region and the amount of wear and tear that clothes go through in a typical rural environment.This pin cushion is "home" made, circular and covered in a blue floral material, encircled with a light blue ribbon (glued on) for extra adhesion. The presentation case was produced as a Welfare Fundraising item and could be displayed on shelf or the like; the pins are a very simple depiction of the Australian Armed Services in the Vietnam war. A small but relevant reminder of the range of Australian Armed Services in Vietnam during period 1962 - 1972.The 20mm lapel pins feature scenes people and technology from the Vietnam War. The lapel pins have been created by master engravers. This silver wool-holder was sold as a souvenir at the British Empire Exhibition of 1924-5. This exhibition was staged to strengthen the bonds of the British Empire and 56 of the 58 nations or territories within the Empire participated. Wembley Stadium was built for the Exhibition and called then Empire Stadium. 27,000,000 visited the exhibition in the two years of is existence. Wembley Stadium survived until 2003 when it was rebuilt. This wool-holder is of interest as an example of the type of household item that would have been in a more affluent home in the 1920s. It is also of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924-5. It has four silver segments held together at each end with silver pins. The segments have an open fretwork pattern and can retract and open to allow material to be stored and to be easily accessible to the knitter or needleworker. The origins of the brass candlestick holders are unknown. However, they both are on display in the memorial Chapel of St Peter aka the Mariners' chapel. Given the style of the candlesticks it is possible that they were initially in use at either the original Port Melbourne chapel operating in the late 19thC. or possibly used at the 1907 building, Siddeley st where an improvised chapel was established. The Memorial Chapel of St Peter is a crucial part of the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne building complex, underscoring the relationship between the organisation and the Anglican Church, as well as being a site of continuous usage since the building was opened.This brass candle stand or floor candlestick holder is one of a pair. A margin around the four edges of the front of the card has been sectioned into groups of dates that correlate with weekends in November 1915, December 1915 and January 1916. Holes have been punched for the weekends of 20-21 and 27-28 November. The back of the card explains that, where a section has been punched, the holder of the card was on duty on the relevant dates at No. 5 Australian General Hospital. The hospital was established when it became necessary to establish a Military Hospital in Victoria during World War I. A new 40-bed Police Hospital on St Kilda Road that had not yet been occupied was taken over, expanded to take more than 600 patients, and opened as No. 5 Australian General Hospital in March 1915. It was soon found to not be large enough and tents were used until more permanent buildings could be constructed.Card, coloured brown on the front and cream on the back, printed both sides in black. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is a collection of pins, badges and gifts from Koki Guests 1965 - 1969. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This item is significant because it shows the wide range of people who visited Kiki in the 1960s.A collection of badges from guests who visited Koki.
