Letters - carbon copy on quarto paper between the RACV (16/11/1921) and response from the MMTB (23/11/1921), regarding shunting of cars at the Richmond car house or depot. The RACV requested flag men like that at the Toorak corner and Lonsdale St. The MMTB said No, flag men and provided at the two locations to regulate cars. Set of typed sheets and map: .1 - carbon copy on quarto paper titled "Average Shortest Headway lines north of Yarra", giving the average headway for each street, route, eg Collins St, .57mins and for West Melbourne 8.5mins. Has in pencil alongside in pencil, the times for "Royal Commission Report 1911" .2 - ditto "Average Shortest Headway lines south of Yarra" Has a note that these numbers were for ordinary weekday tables, holidays and special traffic excluded. .3 - Map - accompanied these reports, titled "Map showing tramway Lines", which has been marked up in red with numbers and the road names. Not understood what the numbers mean, could be a reference to a report numbering. Photograph - Black and White - demolishing cable tram track Swanston St 1925-1926
The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. Tickets were produced to enable first-class travel from Middle Brighton Railways station to Sandringham and then by Electric Tramway from Sandringham Railway Station to the corner of Bluff Road and Royal Ave. The ticket colours indicated to station staff, Inspectors, and conductors the nature of the ticket and its availability These tickets were purchased by the donor in 1970 long after the tramway had closed and travel classes were abolished on the suburban railways. They were available for use on the replacement bus service. Possibly a copy print. 1 - looking at operations in Wallen Road with W2 353 (Hawthorn route 27) returning to the depot and two W2s (possibly 330 and 332) shunting in Wallen Road. 2 - SW6 855 and SW6 848 are on roads 5 and 6 in the "new" shed at Hawthorn. The depot ceased as a running shed on 14/2/1965. Tram and bus services were operated by the Victorian Railways. Compiled through to 26/10/1930, with some loose notes about the final closure of the cable tram system. For each cable tram car house (depot), Power House or Winding house, or route, notes on tickets, dates, rope speed, fares, replacement electric services or buses. The Victorian Railways continued to operate a bus service along the former Black Rock - Sandringham line, long after the tram line closed. Copy negative of an illustration of cable cars in Elizabeth St at the corner with Collins St. Has the Elizabeth St station n the view, along with Craigs and the Royal Bank. Rod Atkins advised 24/08/2020: "Dates from around 1914. taken 11.53 am in high summer. The Flinders Street Railway station looks complete but we still have all the telephone cables on poles in both Elizabeth and Collins Streets. I don't know the year they all went underground. We have two standard "Fitzroy" trams in Collins Street and one West Melbourne tram with standard eight window trailer - no bogie trailers in the photo. Some of the West Melbourne trailers were still six window cars in the 1920's. The major building in the photo is the "Royal Bank" on the South East Cnr. of Collins and Elizabeth Street.
