The first recorded use of meerschaum for making pipes was around 1723 and quickly became prized as the perfect material for providing a cool, dry, flavorful smoke. The porous nature of meerschaum draws moisture and tobacco tar into the stone. Clifton Pugh (1924-1990) was born at Richmond Victoria, and educated at various schools including Briar Hill Primary, Eltham Higher Elementary School and Ivanhoe Grammar. He studied art at the National Gallery School of Victoria 1948-52. Pugh is recognised as a one of Australia’s foremost painters. He is represented in major galleries throughout the country and overseas. Federal member, Frank Davis carries the torch to light the combined Briar Hill and Diamond Valley Hospital bonfire. Hot oil from the torch ran down the torch and lodged in Frank Davis' sleeve whilst carrying the torch. Bob Manuell advised that as a consequence of this event, every time he met with Frank Davis he was informed that he owed Frank a new shirt. Newspaper article from the Melbourne Truth, dated Saturday, September 4, 1943. Front page article about George Frederick Heathcote Hanson, patents attorney, of Gipps Street, East Melbourne. Hanson had been reported missing after boarding a train to Sydney. He body was later found under briar bushes at Young. The Coroner's finding was that death had resulted from exposure, after taking the phenobarbitone. He believed he was not making a success of his business, and because he was unable to give his wife all the things he thought she deserved.
