George Archibald Ellis (1928-2019) was a long time Long Gully resident and local historian. He married Edna Hocking in 1953 and they are both buried at White Hills. In this photo he is receiving a cheque for $1000 on behalf of the Long Gully Historical Society. Daryl McClure (1947-2015) was born in Bendigo and became a radio announcer in 1964. He was a Bendigo Councilor 1969-1970 and was elected the Liberal Party member for Bendigo in the Victorian Legislative Assembly where he served 1973-1982. BHS CollectionThe Australian High Commissioner's Visit to Cornwall. Information supplied by Tom and Libby Luke. Mentioned is the visit by the Australian High Commissioner Mr Michael L'Estrange to Trevessa Farm, Cornwall, the birthplace of Sir John Quick. The Cornish Association placed a plaque on Trevessa Farm in 2002. Margaret Bigg, one of the owners of Trevessa Farm can claim to have relatives of the Ellis Family here in Bendigo. On the back is a copy of a Bendigo Advertiser article titled Cornish to honour their patron saint. It was dated March 4, 1992. Article contains some information on St Piran, the patron saint of miners. BHS CollectionGran Wearne was born in Cornwall in 1855. She married Thomas Wearne in 1878 and they migrated to Australia with two daughters after a stay in the USA. She has six children, but only three survived. In 1897 she lost her husband and had to depend on the community for food and clothing. She got some milking goats which supplied milk for the family and she was also able to sell some. Her surviving son lived with her. He was a miner like his father. In later years she got the age pension. She died in October 1936. The initial partnership in a quartz crushing plant between Henry Koch, Simon Albert and Charles Wallin was dissolved in 1860 with Koch becoming the sole owner. In 1866 the crushing plant consisted of a 50 hp engine and 48 stamping heads capable of crushing 600 tons of quartz per week. By 1902 there were 72 stamps and this was by far the largest crushing plant in the area, serving many quartz mines. Henry Koch (1800-1889) was a German sailor who signed off when his ship reached Melbourne in 1851. Having heard of the gold discovery he proceeded to Bendigo where he was initially employed in puddling in the Myers Flat area. He was soon employed and then made partner in a quartz crushing plant that he became sole owner of in 1860. He was also landlord at the British and American Hotel and the Silver Mines Hotel. HE also started the Perseverance United gold claim. He married Anna Maria Theresia Heinz in 1857. In 1872 he sold the crushing plant for 75,000 pounds and took his family back to Germany.
