The Chapel of Saint Peter was dedicated on September 6, 1917 by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne. The total sum necessary for the construction of the chapel was collected by the L.H.L.G and the chapel stands as a tribute to the honoured memory of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine who lost their lives in the Great War. Note that the building was erected to commemorate fallen Mercantile Marines in the Great War before the war was concluded. This shows that the war and death toll thus far was significant enough at this point that it was having a serious impact on Australian society. A 94 page cookbook compiled by Legacy in the 2018. In the acknowledgments special mention was made of the Bendigo, Canberra and Melbourne Legacy Clubs and to the legatees that contributed recipes. Some of the recipes also appear to come from widows in tribute to their husbands' favourite recipes. The publication was supported by Thales who had been in partnership with Legacy since 2008. Copies were sold for $20 each. The book is dedicated to the men, women and families of the Australian Defence Force. In 1917 Bendigo Amalgamated Goldfield Ltd was formed from the amalgamation of 35 companies with operations on the Garden Gully, Sheepshead, Deborah and Derby lines of reef hoping to increase profits of these existing operations through economies of scale. This was difficult to achieve as the shafts involved were spread throughout the goldfield. Diamond drilling and good geological practices were introduced (Pabst was Chief Geologist) leading to some exploration success. However costs were rising rapidly and in 1923 the directors, deciding that mining would soon become unprofitable, dissolved the company returning assets to the original vendors. J.H. Lenten, Mine Manager, received his second class Mine Manager's certificate in September, 1914 at an examination held at the Bendigo Law Courts. One hundred pages of fortnightly manager's reports for Bendigo Amalgamated Goldfields N.L., Sheepshead Shaft. Reports consist of two pages for each fortnight, signed by J.H. Lenten, Mine Manager. Dates of reports range from November 20th, 1917 to 5th May 1920. The tape has not been played but from the label it is a recording of 'Mission Matilda - a leap for Legacy'. Mission Matilda was when former Junior Legatee Brian Edwards set out in September 1993 to complete a flight around Australia in a tiger moth called 'Matilda' as a tribute to Legacy's 70th Anniversary. He was due to arrive at Essendon Airport on 4th October 1993 and a celebratory luncheon was held. The event was supported by Ansett Airlines and Optus Communications. It is possibly a promotional video. It is 11 minutes duration. This Memorial Booklet was put together by family, friends and members of the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club for a special memorial service held at the club on Saturday 6th November, 2010. 'China' Gilbert was a popular member of the surf club who passed away from ill health in Torquay on 28th September, 2010. The booklet contains a mixture of tributes, black and white and colour photographs of 'China' from his youth through to modern times highlighting his activities at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club and a pioneer surfer in the 1940's and 1950's.This booklet is significant because it commemorates the memory of one of the oldest and most popular members of the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club. The booklet contains historic and rare photographic images of 'China' from his earliest days as a young surfer through to his time as a competitor for the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club and finally senior club member. 'China' was known around Australia for his surfing, mateship and 'larrikin' streak. Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1. Two black & white photos of World War 1. memorial. Granite base with rising sun army emblem 1914 -1919. with a statue of a soldier holding a Banet. The statue is enclosed in a cyclone fence. Houses can be seen in the background. The memorial is situated in the center of Main Street. The memorial is a tribute to all who paid the supreme sacrifice and to all who served. The figure of the soldier was imported from Italy in 1922. The cost of the memorial was 643 pounds. Norwood Secondary Teachers College teachers aimed to increase student awareness of the war years in several ways. The handprints of visiting Japanese student, Tomomi Honda, and year 10 student Hayley Marks, were set in a concrete block in a unique tribute to peace. A Japanese maple tree was planted beside the plaque.
