Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Allard was Commanding Officer of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles 1959 - 1962. He had served with 2/4th Armoured Regiment in World War Two. In the post WWII Citizen Military Force, he was a squadron Commander in 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse before being promoted to command 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.Pewter tankard with 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse badge and engraving on side. The photo shows a group of Legatees outdoors possibly in the 1940s as some of the Legatees appear in the Launceston Conference photo from 1940. From the inscription it was a trip to the Grampians 20 years before it was added to the archive. The man in the centre of the front row could be Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. Frank Clifford Wittman was only 4ft 4 inches tall (132 cms). Taken from an article in the Bulletin when his medals were sold. He served in both world wars. In the 1970s Legatees Frank Doolan, Cyril Smith and Brian Armstrong were making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project. They approached legatees for appropriate items and perhaps Aaron Beattie provided this photo then. Delegates from other states were treated to outings when attending Conferences. Andrew John BALSILLIE MBE, JP. Jack as he was known enlisted in the Australian Army near the end of WWII No 31224 age 16 years. He then served in Malaya 1959 - 1961then Vietnam with the rank of Captain with 1st Aust Task Force HQ Light Aid Detachment (LAD) 7.5.1969 - 7.11.1969, HQ Aust Force Vietnam Army component 8.11.1969 - 7.5.1970. He retired with the rank of Major in 1985 after 40 years plus. He was awarded an MBE in 1969 for his services to the Australian War Memorial. Elected to Committee Bendigo RSL 1988 - 1993 with Snr Vice President 1989 - 1993, re-elected 1999 - 2000. Re-elected again in 2002 as Snr Vice President. Reserve Forces Day Council Boer War Commemorative Medallion 2012 Descendant Medallion with ribbon suitable medallion has been struck to allow descendants and supporters to honour those who served in this all-but forgotten conflict 100 years ago. The Reserve Forces Day Council recognises it was a War fought in the main by Reservists. Permanent forces were small in number with only a Permanent Force Artillery unit and a number of staff officers and soldiers serving in the war. The Reserve Forces Day Council’s objective is to "Raise the profile of the Reserve Forces and to thank serving and former members for their service, and their families and employers for their essential support." This medallion has been struck for descendants and in memory of those Soldiers who fought in the War. The "In Memory" medallion is oval 50mm high by 40 mm wide and bears the inscription "BOER WAR 1899-1902" bordering the face within a colour infill and a clear cover of epoxy. The central image is of an Australian soldier in a uniform of the era. The attractive medallion is 'gold', appearing as surrounds for the inscription. The neck ribbon is in the colours of the Queen’s official service medal, all enclosed in a presentation pouch. A space on the reverse side of the Medallion provides for a personal message to be engraved at a later time. An example is "Presented to Leslie Perrett Descendant of Tpr Frederick Avard, NSW Lancers who died in combat 10 October 1900". The Medallion may be worn at memorial ceremonies and will become a family keepsake.
