Book, J.H. Williams, Elephant Bill, 1956
Though he was officially known as Lt. Colonel J.H. Williams, the author was known to the world at large as Elephant Bill. That is because he spent 25 years living with the elephants in the mountains and forests of Burma. There he trained them to haul teak logs out of the isolated jungles. Yet this is also a story of great courage because when the Second World War struck, it also came to Burma. The Japanese Imperial Army planned to confiscate the Burmese elephants, drafting them to make the bridges and railways they needed to invade India. When he learned of these plans to put his beloved animals to a war-like purpose, Elephant Bill knew what had to be done. The mighty kings of the jungle had to be evacuated to safety. Elephant Bill is thus the story not only of the peaceful days in the jungle, starting in 1921, but also the story of the largest elephant rescue in history. It tells the amazing account of how Elephant Bill, along with his friends and family, rode 45 of the great beasts across the mountains of Burma, before reaching safety in faraway India. Vehicle - Holden FC Sedan, 1956
Although the FC series was substantially the same as the FE, it featured revisions to the radiator grille, body trim and interior. Minor mechanical improvements were also made, with changes to the engine, suspension, brakes, gearchange linkages and the steering box The Utility now featured painted rather than chromed grille and headlight rims, as did the Panel Van. All FC models were powered by a 132-cubic-inch (2.2 L) six-cylinder engine producing 72 bhp (54 kW). This engine was carried over from the FE series, although the camshaft was altered, the compression ratio was increased and torque was improved.[ the FC was replaced by the Holden FB series in January 1960 The FC was the first Holden to be regularly available in Indonesia.two tone green body 4 door sedan. City of Kingston
Photograph - Black and white, c. 1956
Strip shopping and ample parking were features of suburbs in the middle of the twentieth centuries. Cars were still considered a luxury, although that would soon change, and local, independent shops serviced local areas.During the post-war years, the municipality of Moorabbin experienced a population boom. The 'newcomers' were predominantly returnees from the war who were marrying and establishing families; those from the old inner-suburban areas who were moving away from rented premises to establish their own homes on cheap land. The 1950s were a time of immense growth for the area now known as City of Kingston.Black and white photograph of the intersection of Centre and East Boundary roads, Bentleigh East. Several cars are visible both in the foreground and background, and the intersection includes a roundabout. The street is lined with poles to carry electricity cables, and the roundabout is dotted with four poles for electric street lights.Handwritten in blue ink: 56 - 230 Handwritten in red ink: 82% Handwritten in black ink: Ch. 6shopping strip, cars, suburbs -
