Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when the enemy delivered a counter attack and penetrated part of the line. This officer led a party and drove him out, inflicting severe casualties. He set an excellent example to his men.' Earl's letter to his mother, dated 3rd June 1917, tells of the ordeal of being trapped in a mine for forty three hours at Hill 60 on the Western Front. In his letter, Earl states his belief that it was only because of Sgt Alexander Hood that a rescue attempt was undertaken. Earl died of disease the following month (July 1917). Alexander Hood was killed in action on 31st October 1917. Earl's brother, Stewart Leigh Earl ( 2404 - 46th Battalion), served and survived. George Langley, a teacher from Port Melbourne, embarked from Melbourne onboard HMAT Ulysses on 10th May 1915. Commanded the Australian units of the Imperial Camel Corps and later was CO of the 14th Light Horse. Returned to Australia in July 1919. Twice rejected in Melbourne for active service, Rudduck booked a passage to London and joined the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, gaining his commission shortly thereafter. Lieutenant Rudduck lost his left arm in action in France, but following repeated requests was susequently permitted to return to the trenches, where he later died from further wounds on 5th June 1918.
