This object relates to Jack WILLIAMS. He was born on 1/01/1893 in Ballarat, VIC. Jack served in the Army (92) enlisting on, 24/08/1914 in Ballarat, VIC before being discharged from duties with the 8 Battalion as a Army Non-Commissioned Private (PTE) on 20/11/1918. Jack WILLIAMS was not a prisoner of war. His next of kin is Mr & Mrs Williams, 907 Urquhart St. Jack Williams was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.Note inside reads:- "Enlisted with 8th Battalion in 1914 at start of World War 1 & was on ship coming home on leave in 1918 when armestice was signed. The Briggs family lived in Tawonga. Thomas assisted building the Tawonga to Bright road and drove cattle to the Bogong High Plains before marrying in 1887 and raising 7 children, 2 of whom, Ernest and Albert enlisted in WW1 in 1916. Their letters from the war give an insight into its effects and the attitude of the time.The Briggs Bros. lived in the Kiewa Valley at Tawonga. Thomas Evan Rand was born at Hawthorn. He enlisted for service during World War One as an almost 20 year old engineering student, serving with the Australian Flying Corps.A commemorative certificate documenting the war service of Thomas Evan Rand of ‘Urangeline’, Barkers Road, Kew. Thomas Rand was an engineering student when he enrolled as a private in the Australian Army. He embarked on HMAT Orsova A67 on 16 March 1916. He was enlisted in the No 1 Squadron, Flying Corps. The formal certificate records that ‘ Thomas Evan Rand served Australia and the Empire in the Great War and in grateful recognition of his voluntary response to his Country’s Call his name is inscribed on the Roll of Honor of the Town of Kew’. The then Mayor and Town Clerk signed the certificate. [Kew did not become a ‘City’ until 1921]. The certificate highlights emblems and symbols of Australia and Great Britain, and includes the coats of arms of the allies in the war.
