Frank McMahon's father P J McMahon was Shire secretary in the 1930s, living at "Woodlands" in Kangaroo Ground, about 1 mile from the Shire offices. When a fire occurred at the Shire office, the records were safe in a fireproof strongroom. After the fire, the records were moved to "Woodlands" and several rooms were used for Council purposes; a special fireproof steel building was built to hold the records. When the office moved to Eltham, the list of records was checked and found certified correct. Harold Mitchel, advertising businessman, was the son of a saw miller in Stawell and recounted his childhood in "Living Large". He eventually lived at St Andrews, was appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia in 2004 and a Companion (AC) of the Order of Australian in the Queen's Birthday honours 2010, for his community service, leadership, philanthropic contribution to art, heath and education, and support of humanitarian aid in East Timor and Indigenous communities. He also held board positions on a number of arts organisations. He died from complications following knee surgery in February 2024. Alan Money and Jeannie James started the Muse, an intimate theatre in Prahran in the 1950s, and a children's theatre. William Hill Irvine came from Northern Ireland around 1879 and lived in Heidelberg. He became a barrister and Member for Flinders Electorate, serving at various times as Attorney-General, Chief Justice, Premier and Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria. His daughter Beatrice married James Morrison and lived in Eltham. Irvine's other children were William and Agnes. William became Crown Prosecutor. Agnes married Ian Hayward and moved to Adelaide. Beatrice worked with the War Service Committee, raising money for the Red Cross and became chairman of the War Memorial Committee which built the Baby Health Centre, the Children's Library and the Pre-School Centre in Eltham. The family were interlinked with other local people. Emil William (Mon) Motschall lived at Panton Hill all his life and married Marjorie Smith, also a local. In 1969, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the local Fire Brigade and was involved with other local organisations. Marjorie wrote two chapters in Alan Marshall's book "Pioneers and Painters" and wrote a history of Panton Hill.
