Orbost & District Historical Society
black and white photograph, C1916
This is a photograph of a railway camp, set up to house workers and their families when building the Bairnsdale to Orbost Railway in 1916. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost.A black / white photograph of a campsite kitchen. Poster - Jordan Studios, 1906
This is a 1906 advertising poster for the photographic business, Jordan Studios, Liebig Street, Warrnambool. This business was established in 1890 by Joseph Jordan, an Englishman who had been in the British Army in India. He erected the Jordan Studios building (94 Liebig Street) in 1901. Joseph’s son, Arthur, was also a photographer and artist. He photographed and sketched Wilmot (Abraham) several times and used one of these sketches as a basis for this advertising poster. It was well-known at the time that Wilmot was always willing to pose for photographs or drawings. Wilmot (Corwhorong), called ‘the last of his tribe’, was a member of the Tooram group associated with the Kirrae tribe. He spent the early part of his life at the Allan ‘Tooram’ property and was later at the Murray Warrnambool home, ‘Waikato’. He died in 1916 and is buried in the Warrnambool CemeteryThis advertising poster is of considerable importance as it is an interesting example of advertising by a photographer at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also important because it advertises Jordan Studios, one of the most significant photographic businesses in Warrnambool’s history. It also is an example of Arthur Jordan’s artistic abilityThis is large advertising sheet of paper featuring a black and white sketch of the aborigine, Wilmot and Arthur Jordan, the artist/photographer. Jordan is seated and is sketching Wilmot who is sitting cross-legged. The sketch includes a mug, a billy can, a fire and a humorous caption. The edges of the sheet are somewhat tattered. ‘Notice. Visitors to Warrnambool, go to Jordan’s Studio, Liebig St, next Bank of Victoria, for your Portraits, Groups, Views and Postcards’ ‘Hurry up, old feller, I want to go to Jordan’s before I go to the races. Personal Objects of Dr. Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy
Dr. Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (studied at Melbourne University) was a Surgeon Lieutenant on the destroyer S.S. Napier during WW11. Pieces of shrapnel hit Dr. Murphy on the head and he was saved by his tin helmet. He retired to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, the well loved Dr. Murphy provided medical care, working 7 days a week and travelling all over the hills making house calls in all types of weather. Many families couldn't afford his services, and they didn't receive an account or if they did pay, the cheques were not cashed. Often payment was rendered in the form of fruit and vegetables. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine.VEMU1647.1 Naval Cap VEMU1647.2 Geelong Grammar Cap (Rowing) VEMU1647.3 Tin Helmet VEMU1647.4 Mug Intercollegiate Boat Race VEMU1647.5 Mug Ballarat Hospital Medico's VEMU1647.6 Pocket Badge Royal Melbourne Hospital Surgeon VEMU1647.7 Pieces of Shrapnel which hit I.S. Souvenir - Souvenir Egg Cup, 1940s
Small souvenirs such as plates, cups, mugs, ash trays and jars, showing scenes and buildings in Warrnambool, were first produced in the late 19th century for all towns and cities in Australia and were popular in the early to mid 20th century. They are still produced for tourists today. The Historical Society has several of these souvenir dishes but this is the first souvenir egg cup we have seen. The image of Liebig Street is appropriate as this is the main street in Warrnambool. This souvenir egg cup has no great significance historically but it is representative of the type of souvenir sold to tourists and it is interesting because of its age (1940s). It will be useful for exhibitions. This is a white china egg cup with a coloured image of Liebig Street, WarrnamboolUnder the image – ‘Liebig Street, Warrnambool, Vic.’ On the base – ‘Royal Grafton Bone China, Made in England’ warrnambool, warrnambool souvenirs, liebig street -
