Hand copied letters from the files of the Shire of Ballarat East and City of Ballaarat. 1 - dated 31/8/1880 asking for the concession to construct tramways in their district and one dated 19/10/1880 to the City of Ballaarat for the same purpose. Included is a letter dated 30/9/1880 from James Roberts, Supt trams to J. Smith recommending the type of car currently in use in Sydney as the "Yankee" car manufactured by Brill of Philadelphia. 2 - copy of letter dated 6/9/1880 about horse tram rails and support systems - signed by Jas R Davies. [from a contemporary report:] The Shire of Eltham District Society's Parade float theme for 1989 was gold mining which, of course, was a most important aspect of our early history. Bruce Ness assembled the float with items loaned by Warrandyte Historical Society and quite a bit of his own ingenuity. Phyllis MacDonald also arranged for the Victorian Folk Music Club to provide us with appropriate musical accompaniment. To provide a level of authenticity, a present day prospector, Jack Hodson, was in charge of the equipment on the float.
