The SS. Edina was built on the River Clyde by Barclay Curle & Co. for Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Co. She was launched on 4 May 1854 as a 3 masted steamer. She initially carried passengers and cargo across the North Sea. She then went onto serve in the Crimean War (HMS Edina), the American Civil War (c.1862), took fortune hunters to New Zealand during the Gold Rush and ferried passengers and cargo up the Queensland coast and across Victoria's Western District. In 1880 she began to trade between Geelong and Melbourne, traveling in her later years between Portarlington and Williamstown, via Geelong and Point Henry. She averaged 312 trips a year with 100 passengers a day. She made her last trip in 1938.The notice from the S.S.Edina likely relates to her use as a passenger boat, operating between Geelong and Melbourne from 1880-1938. The object is significant for its historic connections to Victoria's early travel networks by sea and to the S.S. Edina as a long serving vessel. A black board with white stenciled lettering set in a wooden frame. On the front is a Notice pertaining to the SS Edina. On the back of the board are 4 paintings of the SS Edina, showing her in 1875, 1884, 1917 and 1938."S.S EDINA NOTICE passage tickets are issued to & accepted by passengers subject to the conditions printed on the back of the ticket. The public gained entrance by purchasing adult / child tickets until about 1992When the council was renamed Whitehorse City Council. since that time entrance has been free.Wooden Ticket Dispenser, the top is manufactured with handmade painted base. When operational, the Gold Battery used cyanide in its processing processes. The land surrounding it required remediation before it could be handed over to Indigo Shire for public use. The land has since been planted with pasture and native plants. Demonstrates tramway equipment used by conductors or One Man Operators to hold and dispense coins when handling fares.Manufactured coin dispenser from brass and steel plate for 3 coins, - 3d, 6d and 1/- (5c and 10c coins fit the relevant slots). Coin holder sections are made from brass, fitted with springs and then braised together as unit. Screwed with four screws onto a cut and folded section of steel. The folded sections of steel would have allowed it fit into a cash bag or holder. The number "60" has been stamped into the lower section of the steel section - see image 3. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. Fare tokens - 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. 1099.1 - photocopy of an article in The Courier, Ballarat Tuesday Feb. 9 1988, page 17 of the house that contained Ballarat ESCo tram No. 12 in the Tuesday Heritage Column of the newspaper. Contains a photograph of the house containing the tramcar. Newspaper Clipping details the former occupiers, the Rayner family, the construction of the extensions around the tramcar, family use, family history and some details of the family members and other local history. The copy of the newspaper Clipping has numerous pin holes in the corner and the rust marks due to use on a display on Tram No. 12 in a display board in the depot from about 1991 to 1998. From a copy made from the newspaper Clipping collection held by Alan Bradley. 1099.2 - copy made March 1999 of the same Clipping for record purposes and to have a good copy. (2 copies held). Also has a review by John Hindle of the "Storming St. Kilda by Tram", presented by TheatreWorks aboard a special tram for St. Kilda, from the Herald Newspaper dated 15/3/1988. The ticket could only be used ...Block of 50 tickets - black ink on dark grey card, SEC Provincial tramways, Staff (employee) ticket, lettered Aa 002900 to Aa 002949, headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways. The 50 tickets have been stapled within red card covers with a heavy metal staple and perforated 21mm from left hand edge. The ticket number is in black ink. The ticket could only be used by SEC employees on Commission business, was not transferable and only good for a single trip. Has form number "TYE 2-19".
