St Laurence O'Toole church and cemetery is located in a rural setting at 801/821 Creswick-Newstead Rd, Sandon. Originally a small wooden school (22’x14’) was erected in Sandon by Father Patrick Smyth (who was involved in the Eureka Stockade movement) in 1859. It was also used for Mass and became known as a chapel. In June 1882 tenders were called for the construction of a brick Church by the Castlemaine architect, T.F. Kibble, and it was built at a cost of 1000 pounds. The church was blessed by Archbishop Goold on 06 May 1883 and dedicated to St Laurence O'Toole. The brick building demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian Rudimentary Gothic style, including the steeply pitched, parapet gable roof form, together with a central steeply pitched, gabled porch that projects slightly from the main gable end. Other intact qualities include the exposed brick wall construction, lapped galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, minor gabled porch at the rear, small ventilation dormers nearby the roof ridgeline, series of stone steps that lead to the central porch with its double pointed door opening and vertical boarded doors, simple rose window in the main gable end, pointed windows, brick buttresses with double lower copings, and the light masonry detailing (the banding marking the floor level within, buttress copings, window and door surrounds and quoins, and the drip moulds).(Shire of Mount Alexander: Heritage Study of the former Shire of Newstead, 2000) The visually connected cemetery demonstrates important visual qualities formed by the regular rows of graves and cemetery architecture, and the grassed and treed rural landscape. Mrs John O'Neil died at Portuguese Fat [sic]. Newspaper clippingThe late Mrs John O'Neil wo died at Portuguese Fat on Wednesday night at the advanced age of 77 years and whose remains were interred i the local cemetery on Saturday afternoon, was most honorably connected, as is also her husband who at the age of 79 years is a left a little while to mourn her loss. The deceased lady was born in England. her maiden name was O'Connor, and she was closely connected with the celebrated Daniel O'Connell. The boy is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries for Atkinson's greengrocery business and general store located at 815 Whitehorse Road. The photo is taken in Whitehorse Road, near the corner of Elgar Road looking towards Zetland Road. No details are known about Albert. The business was owned by Emma and William Atkinson. Elizabeth Maitland Anderson was born c1887, daughter of William Anderson and Elizabeth MacKay. After she retired she lived at the Loyal Orange Lodge in Station Street, Box Hill South. She died on 14 May 1974 at Box Hill. She was cremated and ashes interred at Springvale Cemetery – Banksia, Wall H, Niche 302. Elizabeth Anderson opened Mosgiel Prvate Hospital in 1923 and was the Matron there from 1923-1950. She had been Matron of the Queen Victoria Hospital for four years. She lived next to the hospital at 297 Mont Albert Road from 1923-1930s. 'Mosgiel' was very highly regarded by medical practitioners and patients alike. After her retirement in 1950, along with with Doctors Roberta and Agnes Donaldson, she opened the Elgar Private Nursing Home in Elgar Road. Photo was taken in front of the front door of 'Camelford', 7 Norris Street. The presence of the red cross suggests that it was taken during the First World War. Two of the couples' surviving sons served in the war - Frederic George Bate (SERN 1945); Richard Alfred Bate (SERN 695); the third was rejected because he had lost a finger in an accident. Richard Bate came to Australia in 1868 from Cornwall - the house was named after the town there. He was a cabinetmaker and settled in Angaston, SA for a year before coming to Melbourne where he worked as a builder. He built ‘Avondale’, 176 Union Road (dem.) circa 1883 as a display home for the Davies family, subdividers of the first land auction in Surrey Hills. He built many houses including his retirement home at 7 Norris Street (demolished after 2000). In the 1880s Richard also built the Shire Hall in Station Street Box Hill, replaced in 1934 by the Box Hill Town Hall. Two of his sons were also carpenters. Richard died in 1937 aged 93 and his wife Annie Matilda died in 1935 aged 83; both are buried in Burwood Cemetery. House was rented out until probate was settled. Occupied in 2000 by Julie Ellis.
