Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures while he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall in compound 13D. The paintings were completed over a duration of six years (1941-1946). Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures whilst he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall. Made by a German POW about 1944-45 and given to WO11 R. E. O'Hara. R. E. O'Hara, father of the donor, was a WO11 in the POW camp. He left Tatura at the end of the war when he was posted to Manus Island for the war crimes trials against the Japanese. He continued in the Army until 1952. WO11 R. E. O'Hara VX5293. His rank on discharge was WO1 Dark brown wooden swagger stick with large knob on one end which depicts an inlaid map of Australia in a light colour with a brass crown insignia (bade of rank) inside the map of Australiawo11 r. e. o'hara., swagger stick

Hans - Wolter von Gruenewaldt, German P.O.W (Ex South African - Mining engineer) painted these scenes and figures as murals on the walls of the Camp 13 Recreational hall. After WW2 the hall was purchased by the Murchison R.S.L as its headquarters in 1955. These paintings can now be seen at the David Jones Nursing Home in Murchison.Small photo album, with a collection of painted scenes and figures as murals on the walls of camp 13 Recreational hall. The album also includes photos of visitors to the Internment camps, Japanese Chan, Oki and Takamura families at the Tatura Historical Society, and visitors to the German War Cemetery during 1992/93.
