Janet MANSFIELD (1934-2013 ) Born Sydney, New South Wales Janet Mansfield studied Ceramics at the National School of Art, East Sydney Technical College in 1964 to 1965. She received a Crafts Board Grants in 1974 to study in the United States of America; to research salt glaze technique in 1975; to exhibit in Japan in 1985; to travel to Hungary fir a symposium, and an Australia-Japan Foundation Grant in 1977 to study in Japan. She was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in 1980 and a Spotkanie guest in 1984. Her work was fired to wood kilns and taken to stoneware temperatures. She used salt for shorter firings, or in the anagama kiln depended on the ash and flame for glaze effects. Janet Mansfield has been editor of 'Pottery in Australia' and 'Ceramics: Art and Perception'. In 1987 she was awarded an Order Of Australia Medal for services to art and ceramics. In 1980 Janet Mansfield was a visiting lecturer at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. Clive Leslie Swift (RAAF 430415) was born in Elsternwick in 1924 and served in the RAAF in Borneo during WW2. He was mentioned in dispatches. He married Enid (Ina) Mary Smith in 1947. Together they ran the grocery store at 10 Croydon Road from 1949 until some time after 1954. In the 1980s they were living in Highbury Road, East Burwood and Clive was working for Unigate (later Bonlac) in a managerial position. (REF: Oral testimony, Libby Wilson, Canterbury History Group). The shop continued after the Swifts left but was later destroyed by fire. Clive Swift died in March 2014. This and other dockets were tucked into Ruth Matthews' recipe folder. Ruth and Harold Geoffrey (Geoff) Matthews lived at 42 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills. The donor recalled that her paternal grandmother (Ethel May Matthews) also occasionally shopped at the Swifts' shop as it was closer to her home (31 Guildford Road) than either than Griffith’s on Union Road or Thomas’ on Maling Road . Dockets such as these are reflective of shopping in the pre-supermarket era when women generally walked to the local shop or had proprietors or a staff member come to the house to take weekly orders. A pre-printed grocery docket for C. L. Swift (Late R.A.A.F.) on cream (slightly discoloured) paper printed in black, red and blue filled in with 19 hand-written items, their prices and the total of the grocery order. A green and cream duty stamp to the value of 3d is attached and over-signed with initials as having been paid. Peter WILSON Peter Wilson maintains a ceramic practice at Rosemont Pottery in Bathurst, NSW, as well as working as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Charles Sturt University Bathurst Campus. He trained at Macquarie University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, and has been making reduced stoneware and tableware and exhibiting ceramics since 1980. Wilson writes extensively about ceramics and obtained a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) from Monash University Gippsland in 1993, a Master of Creative Arts from Wollongong University in 1995 and a Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney in 2003. Promoting the Graphic Design/Multimedia program being offered by the University of Ballarat at the Mt Helen Campus. Promoted course as "one of the smallest and arguably the best three year programs of its kind in Australia and the South Pacific region." The brochure lists student awards received including Platinum and Gold in the AGFA International Young Designer Contest, 1999; two meritorious awards in The Art Directors Club Student Awards, New York, USA 1999; Graphis New Talent 1999; two Gold in Souther Cross Packaging Awards, 1998. At time of publication, the School of Arts, Visual Arts reportedly had 210 students with majors in Graphic Design/Multimedia, Ceramics/3D, Painting, Drawing, and Multidiscipline. Minors studies included Printmaking, Photography, 3D, 2D, and Graphic Communication. ___ Course aimed to train "independent, flexible thinkers". Ino KIYOSHI (b 1946, Kyoto Japan, d. 2008) Worked in Australia from 1973–76 and 1978–2008 Ino Kiyoshi was to a family that has been involved in the production of pottery for some 160 years. Working in the family studio while studying at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, he completed his diploma of Ceramic Art in 1969. He then attended the KyotoTechnical School for a post-graduate course in glazing. then lectured in ceramics at the KyotoTechnical School. Following in the footsteps of the famous Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada who had visited Australia in 1965, Kiyoshi Ino visited Sydney in 1973, where he worked with Japanese potter Shigeo Shiga).
