Stripper, The Stripper, 1843
The Stripper was invented by John Ridley in 1843, while trying to overcome harvest labour shortage. In the early ays of Colonial South Australia a labour force was essential to harvest the wheat crop quickly before the grain shook out and fell to the ground. The stripper solved this problem, as t could strip 10 acres [4 hectares], handling approx. 180 bushels [5 tonnes] per day. This replaced 14 men using scythes.Strippers were used in this area between 1870's to the early 1900's.Then the Stripper Harvestors took over this processprinciple of the stripper----The wheat heads were knocked off the straw by a fat revolving beater ,and the grain, mixed with the husks and short straw, was propelled to the rear tin box. When the box became full, the contents were emptied into a winnower for cleaning. Recorded as Mitchell Stripper -

The ruler was used in a farm in Natimuk. The decorated side served as advertising for the McKay harvesting machines used in large farms in La Pampa, a fertile agricultural land in Argentina. In Australian Dictionary of Biography: "'Sunshine' harvesters were dispatched to South Africa, and in 1901 Sam and three Ballarat experts went to the Argentine where they demonstrated 'La Australiana' on a variety of crops so effectively that they soon threatened the trade in North American reaper-binders and headers."Foldable foot ruler: on one side (light yellow) is the ruler and the other side (light blue) are some inscriptions about H.V. Orbost & District Historical Society
Photograph, 1930s
Maize has been grown on the Orbost flats for at least 70 years. When early settlers began to arrive on the Snowy River somewhere in the 1880s, the land was mostly swamps and heavily timbered jungle on the river frontages. The swamps were drained, bit by bit, with short handled shovels working in mud and water. The frontages were cleared by axe and shovel and fire. Several kinds of crops were experimented with such as hops, hemp and maize which grew particularly well and became the main crop of district. The problem then was to thresh and deliver the product to the market. A small single cob machine was brought here and one man turned the handle, while the boy or Mum fed the cobs singly into the machine. A good day’s work would thresh about 50 bushels or about 12 bags (4 bushels). The task then was to cart the maize to market. For a few years this was done by horses and dray carrying about 60 bushels to Mossiface, where it was loaded onto river boats to Lakes Entrance, and then by ocean boats to Melbourne. (information from NEWSLETTER OCTOBER, 2006)The growing of maize in the Orbost district contributed significantly to the economy of the township for many years, The many maize cribs once seen on the surrounding farms have now disappeared and this photograph is a pictorial record of that significance.A small sepia photograph with six men in front of a wooden barn. They are bagging maize. In the foreground are two rows of filled bags. On the right is a lifting machine to take the bags to the top storey. Uniform - Battle Dress jacket, trousers, lanyard and neck tie, 2nd Half 20th Century
This battle dress uniform dates to the latter half of the 20th century. It was issued to the “Prince of Wales’s Light Horse’ Regiment however the date of issue for all items is unknown. A Prince of Wales Light Horse unit was based in Kyneton, a neighboring town to Woodend. This uniform likely originated from the Kyneton area. The jacket and trouser style was still in use during the Vietnam war in which the Regiment participated. Considering the condition of the item, it is highly likely that the uniform has not seen active service. This battle dress uniform is representative of a type of standard issue Army uniform, dating to the later half of the 20th century. It is also in very good condition.Khaki, wool jacket with yellow lanyard over the right shoulder. Prince of Wale's light horse embroidered on a yellow flash, stitched on both shoulders. black and white photograph, late nineteenth - early 20th century
Gold was found at Club Terrace in 1896. One of the best finds at Club Terrace was the 'Ace of Clubs' mine which was later sold to the Mallina Gold Mining Company. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. The 'Ace of Clubs' was eventually closed as the company was unable to cope with the rising water problem. (information Newsletter February 2011 - John Phillips)This is a pictorial record of mining methods in East Gippsland in the late 19th century to early 20th century.A black / white photograph of a mine.
