School Correspondence to BHS re Joseph & Mary Cadogen and school at Spring Gully - information supplied to writer (Mr Willliams, Schofield NSW) 1971 re the school.. Location: First record available dates from the beginning of 1856. It is the Denominational School Board record from the Rev. J. D. Brennan of the Church of England. The record reads: School was conducted by Joseph Cadogen in the church hall which was used as a Sunday School of the wesleyan Chapel about the beginning of 1856. Records of the 1857 show that the weatherboard building - with a canvas roof and wooden floor , cost £100(pounds). Head teacher was Mr. J. Cadogen who was assisted by Elizabeth Hunt, (January-March), Jane Greenehame (april-May, and Mary Cadogen. Cave Hill Quarry was a major employer in the area. The Museum also holds a humidifier made by the engineer at Cave Hill Quarry for Dame Nellie Melba as a gift. On the obverse is a central effigy of George III with olive crown facing right, surrounding legend 'GEORGIUS III. D. G. REX". On the reverse is the central effigy of a draped female figure in helmet and carrying a trident (Britannia) seated on a shield facing left. Sydney, NSW, 12 April 1921). Methodist missionary in New Britain and missionary administrator. Benjamin Danks migrated to Vic with his family when a young child. He entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry in 1878 and was sent with his wife, Emma, daughter of John and Elizabeth Watsford, to join the Rev George Brown in the newly established missionary venture on the Duke of York group in New Britain, where he remained for nine years. An opponent of 'blackbirding', the traffic in indentured island labour for the Australian sugar cane industry, he warned local inhabitants not to go aboard any vessel recruiting labour for distant places, much to the displeasure of the labour traders. In 1880 he participated in the rescue of the survivors of the ill-fated settlement established by the Marquis de Rays. In 1907 he succeeded George Brown as the general secretary of Foreign Missions for the Methodist Church of Australasia and was president of the NSW Conference in 1908. He retired in 1918 and died in 1921 after a long illness attributed to the privations of his missionary career. Danks was highly regarded as a linguist and published the first book in the Tolai language of New Britain. He was a strong supporter of state legislation to control social evils, and to ensure pure food and drugs. He was an ardent temperance advocate. Rev. Daniel J. Draper (1810 - 1866). Arrived in Australia in 1820 where he worked for ten years in NSW and Vic before going to SA where he worked for the next 20 years. He built the Pirie Street Methodist Church. He left SA in 1855 returning to Victoria where, in 1859, he was elected President of the Australian Conference. Rev Draper returned to England in 1865 where he was appointed representative to the British Conference from Australia. He set out to return to Australia with his wife on the SS London in 1866 which almost immediately ran into a storm and all but 19 passengers died. Rev. Dr. William Morley (1842-1926) was born in Notting-Hampshire, England where he received early ministerial training. He was twenty when he arrived in New Zealand, where he was twice President of the Methodist Conference and then President of the General Conference. In 1902 he was called to Australia to take up the position of managing treasurer of the Supernumerary Minister's Fund. In 1891, Morley was a member of the second Methodist Ecumenical Conference at Washington and President of Queen's College Council 1909 - 1925.
