This photograph is significant because it shows one of the tasks involved with the restoration of the P.S. Pevensey which took place in 1974/75. Kevin Hutchinson had come to Echuca from Mildura when the City of Echuca bought the Pevensey. He was responsible for the task of restoring the paddle steamer. He continued to work at the Port of Echuca until his death in 2016. In 1990 he received an Order of Australia medal for his contribution to the Port of Echuca.This photograph is historically significant because the P.S Pevensey had come from Mildura to Echuca in the early 1970's to help develop Echuca's tourism industry. This history was put together by Legatee Ron Crosbie, branch secretary 1959-1963, 1968-1974 and 1995-1999. Appendix 4 gives an account of where the information was sourced from. This short history deails the formation until the branch combined with the Williamstown/Werribee branch to form The Western Branch. In quite some detail Ron Crosbie describes the gathering together of several Legatees to form the new branch. Also the change in priorities to be addressed as the years passed - the widows grew older, their needs changed, their children grew up and left school to be apprenticed, tertiary studies or other work. William Buckley was born in 1780 at Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. After time as a bricklayer and soldier he was caught with stolen property, sentenced on 2 August 1802, and transported to Australia. Between October, 1803, and January, 1804, he escaped from Sullivan's Bay in the Port Phillip district and spent the next 32 years in the company of aborigines wandering between Port Phillip and the near western district as far as Lake Corangamite. The author, Gordon Forth, was formerly a lecturer in the Faculties of Education and Arts and the Director of the Centre for Regional Development at Deakin University in Warrnambool.
