Easter 1936. Mavis and I took turns at the wheel.. cost was unbelievable abour 7 pounds plus a few meals (bed and breakfast was 5/- only) petrol about //1/3d 1/2er gallon. The memorial commemorates four Victoria Cross recipients from St Kilda: Captain A. Jacka V.C. M.C. & Bar; Major W. Ruthven V.C.; Lt. L. D. McCarthy V.C., Croix de Guerre; Ft. Lt. W. E. Newton V.C. It is dedicated in 'memory of all Australians who died in war so that we may have peace'. The drinking fountain is located in Catani Gardens, St Kilda. It was a gift to the City of St Kilda by Sali Cleve, a prominent local resident.
