Flewellen volunteereed for RAN service in January 1913, and shortly thereafter began training as a "boy" on HMAS Tingara. He then served on HMAS Sydney and in 1914 was a member of the Australian Navy & Military Expeditionary Force to German New Guinea, taking part in November 1914 in the Battle of Cocos against SMS Emden. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This bear is in an Australian navy sailor outfit and white cap with the band saying HMAS Sydney. He was given the name Salty. A previous edition had The Australian Navy on the cap band. Sometimes special editions of the bears were produced. An imaginary gathering of the nine Australian Ships which at different times served the United Nations Forces fighting the North Koreans and Chinese during the Korean War of 1950-53. The item belonged to Clarence Stanley FLENTJAR R38429 who enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy. He served on HMAS Cerebus, Tobruk and Melville and a veteran of the Korean War. The Korean War was a war fought between North Korea and South Korea from 25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953. The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea.North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by the United Nations, principally the United States. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 2. Replicas include different campaign stars and the Defence Medal and Active Service Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and cap band from HMAS Sydney. The Rising Sun badge and badges for Return from Active Service and a RAAF emblem. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. HMAS PARRAMATTA had active service during the Vietnam War,escorting the troop transport HMAS SYDNEY to Vietnam in 1965,1968 and 1971. She also served on patrol duties between 1964 and 1966 during the Indonesian Confrontation. In July 1976 PARRAMATTA was diverted to the Indonesian of Bali to provide humanitarian relief following an earthquake which killed over 500 Balinese and injured another 3,000. PARRAMATTA was decommissioned in 1991 as the River Class Destroyer Escorts were replaced by the Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigates.
