A British statesman and author. In a ministerial career stretching almost 30 years, he was twice Secretary of State for Scotland under William Ewart Gladstone and the Earl of Rosebery. He broke with Gladstone over the 1886 Irish Home Rule Bill, but after modifications were made to the bill he re-joined the Liberal Party shortly afterwards. Also a writer and historian, Trevelyan published The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, his maternal uncle, in 1876. A Plaque was erected on the occassion of the re-enactment. The wording is as follows: "In Recognition of a brave adventure on January 5 1998. Five men: Bern Cuthbertson (skipper), Tom O'Byrne (first mate), Craig Dixon, Rick McMahon and Geoff Zwan, landed in Flinders after 4 weeks at sea having rowed and sailed from Darling Harbour Sydney in the 'Elizabeth', a nine metre whale boat. This voyage re-enacted the discovery and naming of Western Port by Royal Navy Surgeon George Bass and his crew of five in 1798." Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1970s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme issued by The Kew Repertory Players for a performance of Curtain Up by Philip King in the Kew Recreation Hall in 1954. George Rogers of Park Crescent, Kew, was the brother of John Rogers, the donor, and the son of Dorothy Rogers.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. George (1895-1976) is on the left; he lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was a clerk and aged 20 when he enlisted on 16 November 1914. He was the son of James Rayment Jnr and his wife Harriet Frances (nee Ratten). He was assigned to 3rd Light Horse Brigade, Headquarters and embarked on TRANSPORT A16 Star Of Victoria on 25 February 1915. He returned to Australia 22 March 1917. His brother James A Rayment (SERN 3106) was a carpenter and enlisted on 14 July 1915, aged 26. He embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic on 24 November 1915, assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers. He won a Military Medal "For gallant work in constructing M.G. emplacements" at Pozieres. Recommendation date: 13 September 1916. Also a Military Medal "For devotion to duty under all circumstances and for efficient handling of working parties." Recommendation date: 14 June 1916. He returned to Australia 13 April 1919. Both are listed on The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. This letter book was used by George Barber to produce letters to send to clients and to retain a copy of this correspondence. Barber was a prominent Warrnambool lawyer in the 19th century. English-born George Barber (1814-1897) came to Warrnambool from Port Fairy in 1853, making him one of the earliest lawyers in the town. In 1867 he formed a partnership with William Ardlie, and this partnership continued until Barber retired in1879. Barber was active in community affairs, being involved with such institutions as the Warrnambool Cricket Club, the Warrnambool Hospital, the Warrnambool Gas Company and the local Horticultural Society. This letter has a connection to one of Warrnambool's important early lawyers and will be useful to researchers if the handwriting can be read.This is a letter book of 750 pages with a hard grey-coloured cover and black taping on the spine. The front cover has a paper label with a handwritten title on the outside and a signature on the inside cover The cover is partly detached from the spine. The pages contain an alphabetical index at the front and copies of handwritten letters. There are many pages unused and there are three loose paper items seemingly not connected to the contents of the letter book. The new Manufacturing Technology Training Centre (MTTC), a part of the proposed Building Construction Training Centre (BCTC), will be a purpose-built, stand-alone, fully fitted-out industry-standard facility. This new space will accommodate current course provision along with specialist training spaces for developing skill requirements in manufacturing technology such as robotics, mechatronics, engineering and industrial automation. Project funding was provided by the Education Investment Fund from the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The project budget is $18.09m, and the resulting building will have a floor space of 4,755m2. The Manufacturing Technology Training Centre is being built in conjunction with the Technical Education Centre (UBTec). While the buildings will have separate street identities the buildings will be joined with shared amenities areas. UBTec will provide a facility including individual learning spaces, learning studios, administration/office space, circulation, open plan learning space, staff common areas, computer rooms, meeting rooms, staff work areas and kitchen areas as well as car parking and site-wide amenities.
