Premier Town Awards are awarded by the Victorian State Government to regional communities that best protect and enhance their environment through innovative initiatives. The award recognizes success in litter prevention, waste management and environmental projects and is designed to encourage tourism. An historical overview of the mine is provided with information regarding its location, depth of shaft, original company, engine house, air compressor, battery and years of operation. Heyday: the surface view of the test shaft, plant and poppet legs of the government shaft at Fosterville (October 1900-April 1903). A pumping plant and winch were purchased from the Tyson's Reef Mine for 900 pounds and removal and assembly cost 723 pounds. Article is titled Lansell Erects Australia's Tallest Poppet Head.George Fauckner was responsible for erecting the tall poppet head at the 222 mine. Eight huge logs were used to make the four legs which morticed together. Blacksmiths made and riveted steel bands around the joints to secure them. Harkness Foundry manufactured the winding plant which was the largest in Bendigo at that time. The Central Red White and Blue Gold Mine was Bendigo's leading gold mine from 1910 - 1913. During the mine's operation, the main shaft was sunk 670 metres, and retrieved over 2500KG of gold. Information display card regarding the 'Big' Deborah Gold Mine, located near the junction of Abel and Adam Street, Golden Square. Earliest work recorded 1860. Shaft 2076 feet. Operations suspended in 1952. Gold yield 51,935 ounces. Battery shed still on site containing a 5 head stamper which was originally a 20 head stamper. John James is standing on the staircase. He erected the poppet head and buildings on behalf of the syndicate. He was an experienced mine manager and highly regarded local engineer. The mine was located close to and on the western side of the Newbridge-Eddington Road, approximately one kilometer north of the Poseidon Road intersection. The remains of a once-prominent mullock head can be seen on the site. Paper label stuck onto image reads 'Plant erected by John James for Mr J. Jackson (seated - J. James, standing).
