Image was donated by Mr. Peter JM Bell of West Yorkshire, UK in 2009. Mr. Bell worked for Robert Jowitt & Sons between 1999 and 2006 when the company ceased operations. Mr. Bell discovered this photo and decided to donate it to the National Wool Museum. Jowitt & Sons was established in 1775 and became a limited company in 1919. They were wool merchants and had buying branches in Australia - Fremantle, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.Photo of approximately 30 men standing on and perpendicular to a railway track. Behind the group are four buildings, two on the left, two on the right. A dog is resting on the railway track. Some items are copies of published designs whereas others are original creations. The collection was donated in 2006.While most of the items in the Fashion & Design Collection of the Kew Historical Society are commercially designed items of clothing, there are also items made by home dressmakers. Many of these exhibit outstanding design knowledge and technical skills. A large and important group of these items of women's clothing is contained in the Grace James collection of outfits created for the dressmaker's daughter. Koninklijke Philips N.V. (Royal Philips, commonly known as Philips) is a Dutch multinational engineering and electronics conglomerate headquartered in Amsterdam. It was founded in Eindhoven in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik. It is one of the largest electronics companies in the world. On 11 March 1927 Philips went on the air with shortwave radio station PCJJ (later PCJ) which was joined in 1929 by sister station PHI. This instrument was manufactured in 1969 to a design developed in 1905. It was used in private practice in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It was donated to the Optometry museum in August 2000. The instrument's inventor, Hjalmar August Schioetz (1850-1927) was born in Stavanger, Norway. He graduated in Medicine in 1877 in Kristiania. He studied ophthalmology in Vienna and in Paris. He was appointed professor of medicine with the obligation of teaching eye medicine in Kristiania in 1901. He demonstrated his tonometer in 1905 and for the next half century it was generally accepted as a reliable means of measuring intraocular pressure.Many examples of Schiotz tonometers can be found in near-mint condition as they were superseded in the latter half of the twentieth century. Although this example is in fine condition it is not historically significantCased stainless steel instrument to measure intra-ocular pressure. Grey leatherette case lined with grey satin and felt. Case contains stainless steel spring balance tonometer, convex test block and two calibration weights. Slipped within upper lining of case are a yellow card of instructions and a greencertificate of accuracy.Case cover imprinted "Schioetz-Tonometer Improved". Notice of a public meeting at St Kilda Town Hall on 12 November1928 about the financing of the Memorial Buildings. The year is not specified in the notice but it would have been 13 February 1929 because the Mayor is identified as Thos Unsworth, who served as Mayor in 1928-29. The Memorial Hall commemorates those who served in World War I, was officially opened on Armistice Day, 1924, and operated as a dance and social hall. In January 1927 the Health Department gave permission for it to operate as the Memorial Cinema. William Edward Watkins was born at Carlton, Victoria on 18 June 1887. He entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1922 and completed his course in 1924. He was ordained and inducted at Collingwood in 1924. In 1925 he was assistant to the Rev. John Barnaby in the Group Mission, which included the churches of Fitzroy and Collingwood. He was called to St. John's Ballarat in 1927, South Melbourne in 1930, St. David's Geelong in 1936, Kew Presbyterian in 1942 and Wallan in 1950.
