Equipment - Two Gravigard IUDs associated with Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, Searle Laboratories
Copper intrauterine devices (IUDs), first marketed in the early 1970s, represent an important contraceptive option for 150 million women worldwide. The method is safe, rapidly reversible, inexpensive, highly effective, long-acting (up to 20 years for some products [1]), and non-hormonal; these attributes make it unique and desirable for many users. However, increased bleeding and pain cause up to 15% of users to have the device removed within the first year [2]; still higher percentages tolerate some level of these side effects yet retain use of the method. In one study, 67% of women using the TCu380A complained about menstrual side effects within the first year of use [3]. (Hubacher et al, 'Side effects from the copper IUD: do they decrease over time?', 2009)This is one of a collection of items received from the practice of Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, FRCOG, Launceston, Tasmania. Two sealed Gravigard IUDs. IUD and inserter are sealed inside a sterile plastic pocket. Manufacturer information is printed on a cardboard insert which holds each IUD inside the pocket.intrauterine device -

The Farmers Arms Hotel was built on the corner of Main and Hailes Street Greensborough in 1864 by James Iredale to cater for the ever increasing number of wood carters and other hauliers carting their wares between Melbourne timber mills and the gold fields. The Farmers Arms Hotel site is currently occupied by the Greensborough Hotel. The proprietor, Mr Monaghan, demolished the Farmers Arms to make way, in 1925 for the new Greensborough Hotel. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Functional object - Megaphone
This megaphone's conical shape amplifies the sound from the narrow end and would have been used to signal a warning or give instructions. Its design is similar to an earlier brass fog horn used on a marine vessel, as it has a wide brim that allows it to be free-standing, and a shoulder rope makes it portable and frees up the user's hands. The narrow end is shaped into a mouthpiece. The megaphone may have been used at sea foghorn on a vessel, although it has no reeds for the sound, or used by a leader of a band or a fireman or other similar uses. This megaphone's conical shape is based on the centuries-old ram's horn or horn from other animals, used to amplify sound to make it travel a long distance or be heard above other sounds. It represents a similar instrument made in the 19th century and used as a signal or to give instructions, such as on a vessel at sea, to a lifesaving team, or in a marching band. Megaphone; brass conical shape with an opening at both ends and a join near the wide end. The wide opening has a broad brim and is painted red inside. A brass ring is attached near each opening and a narrow rope is attached to each ring. warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, fog horn, marine equipment, navigation, warning signal, maritime, nautical, fireman, captain, shoulder rope, signal, safety equipment -

The first Mt Dandenong State School opened in a shed on the property of William Ferguson on the corner of Blythe and Old Coach Roads. The first teacher was Miss Ethel Gruber who opened the school on May 11th, 1897. It wasn’t until 1901 that the school shifted over the road into an old school building that was moved up to the new site from Ringwood. All the old buildings were demolished to make way for a new school that opened in 1991. There are many old, European trees that were planted in the grounds during Arbor Days.
