Photograph - Photograph - Cape Grant Quarry, Portland, 03/08/1953
Port of Portland Authority Archives. From the Port of Portland website: Just 6km south of Portland, the Cape Grant Quarry is located on the eastern cliff of Cape Sir William Grant. This cape represents the core of a volcanic complex between two collapse calderas which underlie Nelson and Grant Bays to the west and east respectively. The Cape Grant quarry supplied an inexhaustible quantity of bluestone for the building of the new Portland harbour. The first stone was tipped at the root of the main breakwater on 17 November 1952. A small band of interested citizens were there to see the historic event. In the building, the breakwater was consolidated by the heavy traffic of Euclid’s and bulldozers and was further solidified by several storms that swept over it. Nowadays, blasting at the quarry is heavily regulated and carried out under the instructions of a qualified “powder monkey.” The days of seeing large explosions, along with the deep long loud BOOM are long gone with techniques of controlled blasting now improving overall environmental and safety standards.Front: Back- Purple PHT Stampport of portland archives, cape grant quarry, harbour development, construction -
Australian Gliding Museum
Machine - Glider - Sailplane, 1946
This Grunau Baby 2B glider, often referred to as the “Blue Grunau”, was built by Australian Sailplanes in 1946 and acquired by a syndicate consisting of Norm Hyde, Rob Dowling, Leo Dowling, Dick Duckworth and Ted Desmond of the Gliding Club of Victoria. Piloted by syndicate members and other GCV members the glider performed well in soaring and cross country flights at the various sites used by the GCV in 1947, 1948 and 1949. The glider went to Sydney for a while and then returned to be operated by another syndicate at the GCV. Pat Burke and Bob McAliece bought the glider in the 1950s and then sold it to Keith, Jack and Bruce Hearn of Melbourne. In 1957 the Blue Grunau moved to Western Australia and was added to the Glider Register as VH-GLC. Thereafter the glider had a series of owners. The glider has come to the Australian Gliding Museum via the RAAFA (WA) Division. The flying record of the Blue Grunau has been logged for the period of 28 December 1957 to 17 September 1975: Time in air – 559 hours 37 minutes from 1513 flights. Two extended versions for wheelchair passengers were built in 1981 & 1983. These were numbered 51 & 52 - a separate number series due to the different type of vehicle. Six, numbered 18-23, were built in 1997-98. These had steel frames, padded seats, and a wide "window sill". At first glance they look the same as the previous NBHs. There are other minor construction differences due to the use of steel framing. 18NBH entered traffic 19/4/1997; 19NBH on 5/12/1997; 20NBH on 19/12/1997, the others added in 1998.Historic - Puffing Billy Railways Narrow Gauge - Passenger Rolling Stock: Excursion CarMade of timber and steel12NBHpuffing billy railway -

In 1960 seventy-four commandos from 2 Commando Company left Point Lonsdale at 6pm on February 17 to cross The Rip in an exercise raid on the Portsea officer school. Shortly after departing, a strong tide caught the raiding party and pushed them out to sea through The Rip, where 10-metre waves capsized many of the kayaks and amphibious vehicles. Many of the men were picked up by larger rescue boats, only to be overturned once again in the heavy seas. Warrant Officer George Drakopolous and the driver of his amphibious DUKW, Private Eddie Meyer, both drowned as their vehicle sank. Eight of the commandos were rescued in Bass Strait after being picked up by an Italian ship, the Toscana. Commando Roger Wood helped others board the Toscana safely but was washed off a rope ladder by a monster wave and into the sea. His body was never found. It remains one of Australia's least-known peacetime military tragedies. One of the later disasters around the Rip between Points Nepean and Lonsdale.
