Postcard - Williamstown Botanic Gardens, circa 1900-1924
The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard is evidence of the placement of two of the cannons relocated from Fort Gellibrand in 1906 and that they were in place in the Gardens in 1924. They were removed from the Gardens in the 1960s. These same cannons remain a feature on the Williamstown waterfront in 2013. The image also shows the original Elm Avenue plantings. A sepia scene looking west towards statue of Alfred Thomas Clark, with cannons on either side of statue pointing east down what is known as the Palm Avenue. The statue is surrounded by a white fence consisting of posts and a top rail. The top of the statue is hidden by the branches of the elm trees. It appears that the elms are in the process of either losing their leaves or new leaf growth. A cactus plant can be seen beneath the lower branches of the elm tree of the right closest to the camera. The cannons were moved from Fort Gellibrand to the Gardens in 1906.Front: VALENTINE’S, M.356 ELM AVENUE WILLIAMSTOWN GARDENS MELBOURNE, VICTORIA. REAL PHOTO. Photograph, Kleinert family at 34 Union Road, Surrey Hills
William Kleinert (Friedrich John Wilhem Kleinert) made wine from the grapes he grew. The house was built in 1905 and was the home of William and Emily Kleinert from 1905. William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran to Surrey Hills. His son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, it built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. The donor of the photo Nada Harris, nee Kleinert, was Ernest and Ida's daughter. Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Digital image, c.1922
The photograph appeared in the MDNS Annual Report of 1922 and is taken on the veranda of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Nurses Home at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood. The Sisters lived and worked out of the Nurses Home from June 1914 to 1953. They attended the disadvantaged in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. The Sisters and Matron are wearing the grey uniform and hat with a red Maltese cross is in the centre of the hatband which was introduced in 1921. These Sisters, plus two others visited 29.079 visits in the metropolitan area and in suburbs as far distant as Elwood, Glen Huntly, Deepdene, Essendon and Fairfield. Of the 1666 patients on the books 394 were midwifery patients nursed in their own homes. It is believed the Matron in the photograph is Matron Reynolds. In February 1885 it was recognized that nursing care was needed for the sick poor in inner Melbourne. The Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) was founded on the 17th of February with one Trained nurse (Nurse) who qualified under the Hospital training system, commencing on the 1st of May, and a second employed six months later, both working in the now CBD, ie from Spencer Street to Spring Street and from Victoria Parade to Flinders Street. From its inception the Society was at the forefront of health care. They provided high quality nursing care; educated their patients in the curing and prevention of disease; teaching the importance of cleanliness and good nutrition, both by verbal instruction and demonstration, even supplying soup and milk when needed. At that time they walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of inner Melbourne carrying their nursing bag containing lotion, ointments, powders, liniment, bandages, dressings, a case of spirits, and the Nurse's own clean apron. The also supplied equipment, such as earthenware hot water bottles, splints, urinals, bed pans, bed cradles, feeding mugs, and air-cushions as well as providing clean bed linen and nightdresses and clothes as necessary. In 1891 the first Nurses Home was rented for 1 year at £65 per annum at 66 Cardigan Street, Carlton; Nurses wages were now £60 per annum. A Doctor gave lectures from the Home to the public on the understanding and prevention of diseases. The Society decided to commence a Midwifery Service and Nurse Fowler, who had previously worked for the Society, was re-employed as their first trained Midwife. She began home births in August 1893 giving them Ante Natal care, taking midwifery bundles and providing clothes for the babe as needed. Following birth, she gave Post-natal care to the mother and babe twice a day for three days and then daily for a week, and longer if required. She resigned after twelve months and Nurse Wilkie was appointed to the position. As well as walking, the Nurses used Public transport in the limited areas it ran, though a taxi was used by the Nurses and Midwife in emergencies and at night. Late in 1891 the Society moved to larger rented premises at 49 Drummond Street and in 1902 moved to 188 Leicester Street, Carlton. The Nurses were becoming exhausted, particularly in the heat of summer. Permission to use bicycles was given to them in 1898 and the Society decided to purchase their own in 1903. A business man offered ‘new free wheel’ bicycles at £13 each, which included maintenance for one year. Bells and wooden frames were added at a cost of £5 per frame so the Nurses could carry extra equipment. Nurses bags were strapped to the handlebars. Soup was made for those in need 2-3 times a week, and if patients could not arrange to have it collected, the soup was delivered by the Nurses on their bicycles. Their use caused a change in uniform, with white pith helmets, and veils covering them and tied under their chins, now being used. In 1904 the Society relocated to rented premises at 5 Royal Terrace, Nicholson Street in Fitzroy. In 1913 a Nurse had her ‘board and residence, uniforms, bicycles and laundry expenses’ provided and was paid £50 a year for her first six months. At the end of a year her salary was increased by £5, and later she earned £60 a year. Over the years the Nurses complained their veils became wet in the rain and asked for a change of uniform, but this did not occur until 1921. In 1914 the Society was at last able to purchase their own premises, 'Floraston' 39 Victoria Parade in Collingwood. During the Spanish Influenza epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford 'T Model' cars were procured which enabled the Nurses to triple their visits. It was recorded on the 21st of May, that the seven Nurses had visited 1,212 persons with influenza in the last three months, how many visits to each is not known. In the whole of 1918 the Nurses, including midwifery cases, visited 1,100 persons. It was also recorded on May 7th the Nurses were delivering 100 quarts of soup to the needy each morning. In winter they also carried wood in the cars to distribute to their destitute patients as needed. In 1921-22 many of the people nursed by the Trained nurses (Sisters) suffered from malignant and tubercular disease, often the Sister would visit to find the patient was desperately ill living in a room alone and no one there to even give them a drink. In these cases the Sister would send them to hospital, but if possible most cases were nursed in their home. During July 1921- 30 June 1922 the four Midwifery trained Sisters averaged 8 confinement cases a week and sometimes gave Post Natal care to 15 to 18 patients a day. At the time of confinement a Student from the Women's Hospital accompanied the MDNS Sister and if complications occurred the patient was transferred to the Women's Hospital. The Society often had to provide blankets, sheets, set of baby clothes and night gowns for the mother. In many instances the Society provided milk for many months. The midwifery Sisters often travelled long distances in the cars Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state they were sold in 1927 and the Sisters went back to using public transport, as well as their bicycles which continued to be used in inner areas until 1945.. The Midwives used taxis when a birth was imminent. Black and white photograph showing 9 Sisters, 5 standing at rear and Matron, in the centre, of 4 seated Sisters on a balcony wearing their Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) uniforms of grey coats, with revered collars and belt, over their partly seen grey uniforms with white collars. Five of the Sisters are wearing glasses. All are wearing grey brimmed hats with a Maltese cross in the centre of the lighter colour hatband. Part of deep metal scroll work of the veranda rail can be seen. City of Kingston
Photograph - Colour, c. 1993
Patterson Lakes is a suburb in the City of Kingston that is built one kilometre upstream of the mouth of the Patterson River. The area is bordered by the Patterson River and Eel Race Drain which enters the Kananook Creek. The suburb consists predominantly of newer housing developments and the tidal canal system of the development joins Port Phillip Bay.Patterson Lakes and the Kananook Creek were previously part of the extensive Carrum Carrum Swamp. The area was once a source of fish and eels for the Mayone-Bulluk clan of the Bunurong people. Over time the area was drained and in 1973 investigations commenced into the development of a unique residential area that would be built adjacent to canals and waterways. It was originally proposed to be known as "Gladesville". The development would give the suburb's homeowners access to Port Phillip Bay "from their back door". Circa 1974, the area was rezoned from rural to residential and named Patterson Lakes. Development has been continuous since the 1970s with construction of residential housing, schools, shopping centres, marinas, a hotel and library.Laminated colour aerial photograph of the Carrum and Patterson Lakes region within City of Kingston. This 1993 image includes Patterson River Secondary College, Roy Dore Reserve, Kananook Creek and Nepean Highway. The railway line can be seen as it veers inland from Eel Race Road, Seaford. The section of Palm Beach Drive, Curlew Point Drive, Snapper Point Drive, Clipper Island and Myola Street in Patterson Lakes appears to be a recent development with many spare blocks and new houses under construction.patterson lakes, seaford, kananook creek, carrum carrum swamp, canals and waterways -

Wembley Stadium was built for the Exhibition and called then Empire Stadium. 27,000,000 visited the exhibition in the two years of is existence. Wembley Stadium survived until 2003 when it was rebuilt. This wool-holder is of interest as an example of the type of household item that would have been in a more affluent home in the 1920s. It is also of interest as an example of the type of souvenir sold at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924-5. It is a useful and attractive display item. This is a silver circular-shaped wool holder which was a souvenir of the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley in 1924-5. It has four silver segments held together at each end with silver pins. The segments have an open fretwork pattern and can retract and open to allow material to be stored and to be easily accessible to the knitter or needleworker. The Wembley emblem with the image of an Art Deco lion is welded onto one of the segments. Book, Fifth reading book, Late 19th century
This book is an early school reader for the Fifth Grade. It appears to be a British publication and has no Australian content (except for a brief biography of Captain Cook). The name ‘Matilda F.’ from Mailors Flat can probably be identified as Matilda Freckleton as the Freckleton family members were prominent settlers in the Mailors Flat area in the early 20th century. Matilda Freckleton (1886-1957) was the daughter of Francis and Catherine Freckleton. She married Calvin Chambers in 1906. This book is of minor interest as it is an example of an early school reader and it probably belonged to an early Mailors Flat resident, Matilda Freckleton. This is a soft cover book of 414 pages. The original front cover has been lost and a piece of grey cardboard has been used as its replacement. The back cover was originally a brown colour. The spine is now covered with a piece of grey material stitched on to part of the original spine. Some front and back pages are missing. The text has three sections and these contain prose extracts, stories, poems, hymns and work exercises. There are some black and white illustrations. A couple of pages are loose. Pasted in at the front and back pages are cuttings from newspapers. The handwritten material is in blue ink and pencil. There are two blue stamps of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. ‘M.E.F., Mailors Flat’ ‘Matilda F., Mailors Flat’ matilda freckleton, mailors flat history, history of warrnambool -

This photograph shows one of the many weddings held at the Mission to Seafarers over the years and provides an overview of wedding fashion of the late 1920s. The bridesmaids were Ella Kendall and Molly Walker. In this image a horse and cart can be seen in the background on Flinders St and a Telegraph pole. Dora would continue association with the Mission and as president of the Flying angels in the 1960s-70s she would be awarded the MBE for services to Community presented by the State Governor of Victoria. This photograph shows one of the many weddings performed at the Mission to Seafarers over the years. Cross referencing with the marriage registers, also held in the collection, reveals that this photograph is Amy Dora Walker (known as Dora) of East Malvern marrying Harold Priestley Simpson of Surrey Hills / Mornington on 14 February 1928. Furniture - Butler’s table, 1920-1930
The console was originally used in the dining room of the Manse, the chaplains' residence. Upon completion of the Institute building in 1917, the Goldsmiths moved in after living for many uncomplaining years in a flat on Australia Wharf, which had “many disadvantages and discomforts”. It was photographed in the Manse dining room by the reverend or Mrs Weller c. 1926. In the same style as the other oak sideboard, we can assume it was made by the same maker, H.F. Fischer around the same time.It is not known when they were purchased or gifted. But they are likely originating from Europe. Reverend Weller photographed the dining suite during his stay betwenn 1926-1929 (see item 1568).Wooden oakwood dining chairs with two heart-shaped carvings on the backrest. In 2013, Gary Partington generously donated farm implements to Greensborough Historical Society. These implements had been used at the family property "Willis Vale" up to the 1960s. Members of the Partington family farmed the area from the 1840s. In this photo, Elinor, Gary and Faye stand behind the plaque that explained the provenance of the displayed implements. Unfortunately, one of these items was stolen in December 2016. More photos of this event can be found at the GHS Resource Centre.Digital copy of colour photograph.greensborough historical society, partington family -

Negative - Photograph, Hurst's Bridge, c.1912
The area of Hurstbridge was originally known as Hurst’s-bridge after the timber bridge built over the Diamond Creek near Hurst’s station in late 1881/early 1882. A large group of people can be seen strolling across the timber bridge over the Diamond Creek on Hurstbridge-Arthurs Creek Road, Hurstbridge. It was built by John McDonald, of Arthur's Creek and was demolished and replaced in 1917 by a reinforced concrete arch bridge designed by John Monash. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Negshire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, 1912, bridge, diamond creek (creek), hurstbridge, hurst's bridge -

Functional object - Inspection Plate, Mid-20th century
This cast brass deck inspection cover with housing is made for the marine environment. Inspection plates have been incorporated into the ship's design since at least the late 19th century. Modern deck inspection posts have a similar design and can be made from stainless steel, aluminium or plastic. The deck inspection plate gives marine vessel owners and inspectors easy access to the areas below the deck to check for signs of damage, wear or corrosion. This mid-20th-century inspection plate with housing shows the importance of marine safety. Inspections on marine vessels today are still carried out via inspection ports made from modern materials. Animal specimen - Lamb Fetus
This lamb fetus has been placed in preserving fluid. This can be formaldehyde, isopropyl or ethanol. It is important that glass jars are used, as plastic will be affected by the chemicals over time in the preserving fluid. Note the glass lid and the rubber seal; also the plastic covered metal clasp that has no contact with the contents. It is not known how long the lamb has been in this jar, but it is remarkably well preserved with just a little film of scum on parts on the top of the interior of the jar.The use of such preserved specimens is widespread in teaching students of all ages, veterinary operatives and museums of the composition of certain animals, insects and birds. Any information about an animal — be it photographs, blood, feathers or fur samples — is better than no information at all. But specimens are vital to ground-truth.Large glass jar containing a lamb fetus in preserving fluid. Education, Nests, Eggs in a Glass Case, c1900
Egg and nest collecting was considered a hobby for the 19thC Victorian gentlemen and the handwritten notes that often accompany the eggs can be as valuable to curators as the eggs themselves. Details have helped scientists understand the changes in bird nesting behavior in the past century and some of these historical eggs have also played a role in major scientific discoveries. Early settlers in Moorabbin Shire were fascinated by the new flora and fauna they found in the local and wider countryside. This is a typical collection of natural objects of an early settler in Moorabbin Shire 19thC when Charles Darwin inspired a general interest in the evolution of speciesA collection of bird eggs, nests and a seahorse in a wooden display box with a glass lid .bird's eggs c1900, bird's nests c1900, victorian era collectors, early settlers, pioneers, moorabbin shire, bentleigh, cheltenham, natural sciences, ornithology, darwin charles, -
