This is the home of Ernest Lance Young and Beryl Mair and the childhood home of their children Barbara, Ken and Laurie. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. Black & white photo of the street view of 11 York Street, Mont Albert, looking down the driveway. Although the house is heavily screened by a mature garden with several large trees or shrubs, part of the front and one side can be seen. The Ballarat School of Mines Model Mine was used to give practical experience to students, as well as to conduct assays for companies and individuals for a fee. The fee assisted in keeping the Ballarat School of Mines afloat in its first years. The Battery, or model mine, included a Stamper Battery, Wilfrey Tables and various pieces of equipment students would encounter in their workplace. Book, Ballarat School of Mines Apprentices' Handbook, 1953, 1953
Apprentices' Handbook, Issued with the compliments of The Council and Staff of The Ballarat School of Mines and Industries. It contains a foreword from the Principal to apprentices. It states how they are taking the first step towards becoming a first class craftsman in their chosen field. The course is set down by the Victorian Apprenticeship Commission and consists of the practical experience obtained while on the job together with the subjects studied at this school. Page 26 gives the date the book was produced. From the diary of a service man dated January 25, 1913:- "Been filing crank pins all day. Hard to get a good job if they are much out of round, but it is the only practical way at present." That is 40 years ago and contrasts with today. Photo shows the view looking east along Sturt Street from Harry's building, The card has been wrongly titled as looking west. Tram 32 is westbound to the Gardens. In the view are Lester House, Crockers, and Tunbridge's stores. On the rear Wal Jack in a note to Ken Magor of Newcastle has drawn in a diagram of the track arrangements, where the tram was. His notes are "Sturt St looking EAST, 1948. No. 32 painted the new colour scheme. Photo taken from Doveton St corner." The photo appears to be taken soon after the opening of the electric trams, as the tramway is well paved compared to the rest of the street which shows vehicle tracks etc. For similar images see Reg. items 834, 838, 2151 and 2659. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has a destination board on the front dash of the tram. The photo appears to be taken just before the one used in item 2659 given the shadow of the pole in front of the tram.
