Von Devonie Bromley was in the AWAS, signaler, driver, in Nhill, Victoria, in WW2. The field telephone (army issued) was used during her war service.Khaki coloured heavy metal box with a strap holder on each end and a hinged lid. A clip to close is attached with a screw. Safe, Coolgardie, pre 1945
Coolgardie safes were first used on Western Australian gold fields, approx 1890's. Soon became universally used in Australia until ice chests took over about 1940. Some stood 2 meter high by 1 meter square.Frame with hessian attached on all sides. Galvanized iron tray on top holding water which is siphoned down to keep hessian wet. The camp sites today are on private property, and as they were dismantled after the war, and on the closure of the Migrant camp, very little physical evidence remains today.Camp 3 held 1000 internees, Germans, Jews and Italians, including German Lutheran families from New Guinea, German families from Palestine (Templer settlement) and Austrian Jewish refugees. Sleeves contain: "Aboard the Hell Ship Dunera to Sydney" 8/9/1979; "Dunera Remembers"; The Day Hitlers Choirboys were Trapped in Australia" August 1964; a printed prayer and a hand typed copy. These clipping belonged to Wilhelm Eckels who was a wool buyer in Sydney when war broke out.
