The Bendigo Post Office was built between 1883 and 1887 by McCulloch and McAlpine. It was designed by George W Watson in the 2nd Empire architectural style.Colour printed envelope - Bendigo Post Office Centenary 1887-1987. Envelope has a 37c stamp with an image of a cockatoo, which has been stamped with a black stamp dated 30 Sept 1987, Vic 3550 - the 'first day" of issue. Glass chimney from a Melbourne Cable tram oil headlamp - base partly broken and top broken off and damaged - four fragments from original. Has a note that the lamp was restored by Alf Twentyman, later take by Norm Maddock for the Stanhope St Museum. Written by Robert Green Feb. 2015. The chimney has dirt marks on the inside. Silver coloured metal lighter. It has a cylinder to one side which has vertical line markings. The cylinder also has a rusted metal band around it. The top of the cylinder has 5 lines of little dot markings which go round the circumference of the top. Attached to the cylinder is a rectangular piece of metal. This has the spark wheel in it. This is a 1923 booklet containing information on the Telephone Exchanges and the lists of subscribers in the areas of Geelong, Camperdown, Casterton, Hamilton, Mortlake, Portland and Warrnambool. Telephones were in use in Victoria as early as the 1870s with the first Telephone Exchange facility established in Melbourne in 1880. In 1890 the first Telephone Exchange in Warrnambool was established with 35 subscribers. In 1912 the first automatic Telephone Exchange for public use was established in Geelong. This was the second established in the British Empire. This booklet is of considerable importance as it lists all the telephone subscribers in the Warrnambool area in 1923. It is a great research tool as it gives not only the addresses of the subscribers but also in many instances their occupations and business names and in the areas around Warrnambool the names of the properties at that time. This is a soft-cover booklet of 104 pages. It has a dark grey cover with printed information on both sides. It was published in 1923. The pages are stapled together and contain lists of Telephone Exchanges, information on the distances from one Exchange to another in the area and the rates of charges for telephone trunk lines. It also has a list of subscribers in the Camperdown, Geelong, Hamilton and Warrnambool areas. The front cover has a small piece missing at the right hand side edge. It is not known how these goggles belonging to the late Evan Johns were acquired. Evan did not enlisted in the Defence Forces but did have an interest in aviation.The frame of these goggles is in excellent condition with virtually no paint loss and only minor marking. The pressed brass frame incorporating hinged lens holders is finished in black paint.The nosepiece leather and backing chamois are both good . The original rubber facepads are in excellent shape and remain pliable; The clear lenses do have delamination marks . The strap components are excellent throughout with clear Air Ministry markings. The school exercise book belonged to Florence Tyler who was born in 1884 and died in 1914 at 30 years of age. Two letters within the exercise book are dated 1898 so it is presumed this is the year Florence compiled the book. The school was Warrnambool State School No. 1743 which opened in 1876 after the earlier Warrnambool Common School closed. This exercise book is of interest as an example of school subjects and standards covered at a 6th grade level in the late 19th century. A school exercise book of 50 pages. The hard cover of the book has a blue pattern and a label to identify the school and student. The pages are ruled with handwriting in black ink and ruled dividing lines in red ink. Each page covers a different subject - English (grammar, parsing, writing, spelling, syntax, poetry), Arithmetic, Geography, History, Science and Music. Northern District School of Nursing nurse's base uniform 1950s - 70sBlue cotton uniform worn beneath white apron. The uniform is open at the front with nine button holes in right placket for buttons and shanks to attach. There are corresponding buttonholes on left side for closing with white buttons and metal shanks, a small pocket at top left and a pocket at RHS of skirt. There is a small buttonhole at back of neck and two each on inside seam of sleeves to attach collar and cuffs. The front has gathering from below the shoulders and the back top has an inverted pleat at centre.Two white tags one with 'Cotton' in red is attached inside back neck. Many souvenirs were made to mark this occasion. Some were unique and hand-made. The Guirguis New Art Prize (GNAP) is a biennial national acquisitive $20,000 contemporary art prize.
