Diggers and miners. Diggers and Miners. Some of these fields were the scenes of remarkable rushes, comparable with the great rushes of 1851 and1852. For example, it was unofficially estimated that there were 50,000 on the Maryborough field in 1854, over 50,000 at Fiery Creek (Beaufort) in 1855, 40,000 to 50,000 at Dunolly in 1856, 60,000 at Ararat in 1857, and, in the last of the great rushes of the' fifties', 30,000 at Back Creek (Amherst) in 1859. Extract from Bendigo Advertiser, January 4th 1864 (Severe Storm) with attached typed note stating that this extract found in relation to the ''heavy rain fall in February last'' (no date! - but about ''a century ago'). Mention in this note that the hotel mentioned - Costello's Axe Creek Bridge Hotel may have been later renamed The Perseverence (sic). Letter describes journey to Bendigo and crossing of Deep Creek. Dr L L Smith was a pioneer of the Vermont District. He owned 250 acres in the area bounded by Boronia, Canterbury and Heatherdale Roads and the creek. The property was known as L L Vale after which the road was named. Name was changed to Boronia Road in later years. He was a Doctor with rooms in the City, was a member of Parliament.Sepia Postcard of L L Road, Vermont (now Boronia Road) taken in the early 1900s (card is postmarked 27 Aug 1909). Shows the road going down it is presumed to the creek. It is possible that the house is that of Dr.L.L.Smith. See History.|Orchard in background is the Finger orchard. (from Mr. Shambrook - Tim's father)|Information on the back of the Postcard reveal it was sent to Miss Roberts of 61 Hoddle Street Richmond Victoria by Muriel at 37 Victoria Road Northcote and was posted at the Fairfield Post Office Victoria on 27 August 1909. The State Electricity Commission produced a Telephone directory for each of its construction sites during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme during the 1950s to early 1960s. The telephones were linked via the Switchboard. The booklet includes instructions for operating.The SECV constructed the KHES during the 1950s. It included construction sites on the Bogong High Plains and the townships of Bogong and Mt Beauty. It also connected the Scheme with the outside world and was operated through the switchboard which was located in Mt Beauty. This booklet also gives names of staff and some workmen - their occupation and their whereabouts of work at the time. Cardboard cover with pages inside bound by metal clasp. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse.
