The (logging) truck carries a representation of John Glover’s painted landscapes, which Cox has painted on a solid block of wood. John Glover is one of Australia’s most celebrated colonial landscape painters. Born in England, he was a highly successful water-colourist and painter of landscapes in the tradition of French artist Claude Lorrain. Arriving in Australia in 1831, Glover adapted his picturesque style and luminous technique to his new surrounds, creating naturalistic and atmospheric paintings of Australian nature, settler life, and Aboriginal culture. Working out of doors, Glover developed an understanding of the unfamiliar Australian landscape, especially the twisting forms of native eucalyptus trees. His direct experience of nature, as both pioneer settler and painter, resulted in a new approach using a subtle palette of olive greens, ochres, misty greys and intense blues, and layered glazes of mauve, grey and gold, to portray Australian light and atmosphere. Dale Cox continues the ongoing preoccupation and tradition of landscape painting in the Nillumbik area and our impact on the environment in a contemporary way. The truck creates a playful nexus between painting (representational landscape) and sculpture, purposely bluring boundaries across these traditionally distinct disciplines. ‘Ghost’ seeks to convey the idea that when we remove something significant from a location, like the landscape itself, the remaining ‘place’ changes to become a new ‘place’. This may seem self-evident until we think more deeply about location and landscape. The white truck is a ghost, an ethereal, transient being that spirits away an entire place, forever removed from itself, and forever changed. Logging wild trees can never be like harvesting a ‘crop’. Logging removes a landscape, and changes a place forever. The ‘packaging’ of this painted landscape highlights the anomaly between commodity and our environment. Pictorial guide to the artwork Our Eltham, a collection of 31 panels celebrating life in the Shire that were collaboratively created by artist Nerina Lascelles and ceramicist, Linda Detoma and commissioned by the Eltham Cemetery Trust. Our Eltham Artistic Recollections is a collection of panels that was commissioned by the Eltham Cemetery Trust as part of its vision to offer the community a fresh and unique relationship to the Cemetery. 31 panels were produced depicting historical images of Eltham and the nearby area with images of indigenous flowers and plants. A majority of the images were provided to the collaborating artists in digital form by Yarra Plenty Regional Library in partnership with Eltham District Historical Society who holds the significant Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph collection in partnership. EDHS and YPRL staff (Local and Family History Librarian) provided advice on which images to use and also provided assistance with the provision of information and editing services for this booklet, which is also available electronically. The collection of panels was collaboratively created by artist Nerica Lascelles and ceramicist Linda Detoma. The project was designed and constructed by Leigh Wykes with Australian stone and Ironwork by Neil Carter. This is a book written by Caroline Jordan about colonial women artists in Australia. It gives information on women artists whose achievements have been discounted in the past because they were labelled ‘amateurs’. This book is of interest because it provides information on colonial women artists and has important background details that will be useful to those studying early women artists in other towns and districts. The author visited Warrnambool as part of her study of early women artists. This is a hard cover book of 224 pages. It contains sections on Acknowledgements, Prologue, five chapters, Epilogue, Abbreviations, Notes, Bibliography, Sources of Illustrations and Index. This watercolour painting depicts a scene at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, showing some of the buildings and one of the vessels in the lake. The artist, Alfred A. Perry, lived in Victoria at the time of creating this painting. This painting is significant for its association with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It shows a point in time, September 22nd, 1979, at which time the Ship's Chandler store was on the north of the lake. The owner was John Conrad Brown NR 706 of the 38 Bn. He was severely wounded in action (GSW to face and left arm). He returned to Australia and was pensioned off. The owner had this artwork in his house at Goornong until a storm blew the roof off. It was important to him.This is a large black and white print depicting a scene in the Amiens battle. It shows Australian and German men fighting. A small stone bridge is near the centre of the work. High explosive blasts are depicted in the picture. It is finely detailed i.e. buttons on uniforms and dovetail joints in the ammunition box. It is set in a thick card mat. Under the image is the caption. The frame is a simple heavy timber type. David Robson has had a lifelong association with aircraft. He started flying at the age of 16 and served for 21 years in the RAAF as a fighter pilot, test pilot and forward air controller (including a tour in Vietnam in the 0-2A). His hobby is painting, and he naturally turns to his own experiences and visual images to convey the wonders and beauty of flight, the camaraderie of the Services and ugliness of war.Original watercolour of USAF Cessna 0-2A supporting A/An Army Bell Helicopter in 1969 in Phuoc Tuy Province. Forming the headwaters of the Johanna River and noted for its majestic Myrtle Beech and Blackwood trees, in 1921 the property came into the possession of Mrs Jessie Fry, wife of Mr Thomas Fry, a well-known and respected local bushman and timber getter. Here the family lived and it was Mrs Fry who named the place 'Melba Gully'. Sometime in the late 1920s Mrs Fry was approached by Pioneer Tours, the bus company, to see if she would provide lunches and afternoon teas for their passengers travelling between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell. Mrs Fry rose to the challenge; the Melba Gully Luncheon Rooms were built adjoining the Fry home and she was in business. Mrs Fry was unfailing in her courtesy and kindness. She was also a splendid cook, known for her feather-light scones and sponges. Home-produced strawberries and cream were a special treat. Visitors were also taken on a tour of 'The Gully', often guided by one of her young sons. Melba Gully Visitors Book is testimony to her many satisfied customers. Tom and Jessie Fry sold the property on her retirement in 1947 and the tearooms ceased to operate. It again changed hands in 1958 to Otway residents Mr and Mrs Axel Madsen, and in 1975 they made the magnificent gesture of gifting the 48 hectare Melba Gully to the people of Victoria..Framed painting in oils of a weatherboard house with picket fence, before a backdrop of forest.
