Book, Thomas Nelson, Australian Women at War, 1984
This book records the achievements of our women for all time. It tells of bravery, self-sacrifice, endurance and devotion. When Patsy Adam-Smith wrote Australian Women at War in 1984, her aim was to tap into the memories of all the ‘brave, modest, forgotten women’ while they were still alive, in order to honour them. Now, for the first time, this iconic volume is republished for an entirely new generation of readers. This magnificent work is a history of how Australian women have responded to war – from 1900, when the first nurses sailed to the Boer War, to 1945 and its aftermath. Recording the achievements of our women for all time, it tells of their bravery, self-sacrifice, endurance and devotion. Australian Women at War is a tribute to Australian women.Index, ill, p.386.non-fictionThis book records the achievements of our women for all time. Book, Reginald Thompson, Cry Korea, 1952
From September 1950 Reginald Thompson reported from the frontline during the four months in which the Korean War was 'won' and 'lost'. After the Inchon landings, he followed UN forces up to the Chinese border and back, witnessing scenes of appalling brutality. No newcomer to war, Thompson was sickened by the carnage left in the wake of America s military machine, and horrified by the implications of this new form of warfare. Cry Korea is not only a powerful piece of reportage, but a cry for us all to examine the all too resonant issues of modern conflict and intervention.Index, ill, p.303.non-fictionFrom September 1950 Reginald Thompson reported from the frontline during the four months in which the Korean War was 'won' and 'lost'. Unions Ballarat
Student Revolt! La Trobe University 1967-73, York, Barry, 1989
A history of three La Trobe University student union activists in the early 1970s - Brian Pola, Barry York and Fergus Robinson - who disobeyed the University's order to stay off campus. They were subsequently imprisoned at Pentridge Prison for several months although no criminal charges were made known. The account of on-campus student politics is fascinating and complex in comparison to contemporary student unionism. At the time of their release and to date, the University has not apologised to the "La Trobe Three" for what happened. The book is written by Barry York who was one of the "La Trobe Three"; it was published in the year of La Trobe University's 25th anniversary. Relevant to student unionism in the 1970s and contemporary to Australia's participation in the Vietnam War. Issues relating to university culture, social justice and activism.Paperback; 184 pages.
