Document, 'The Blood Chit", 1968
"The Blood Chit" carried by all United States Air Force Flight crews operating in South Vietnam, the "blood chit" so nick-named by flight crew - was designed to assist in the safe return of downed flight crew. The "chits" message - written in 15 languages - identified the carrier as a US citizen seeking food and assistance. Each "blood chit" was serially numbered and registered to assist in identification by US Forces. This one was issued to Squadron Leader Alan R Reed during his tour of duty in South Vietnam with the US 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. COMRADES IN ARM THEN AND NOW: Soon after arrival at the USAF'S 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in South Vietnam in 1968, Squadron Leader Alan Reed was assigned in an almost new Phantom RF74C (AF67442) Reconnaissance Aircraft - nicked name "Carolina Kangaroo" along with its crew chief, Sgt Dale Miller. The trio operated as a team for the remainder of Alan's tour of duty. In 1981, while serving in the USA as the Australian Air Attache, Alan (now an Air Commodore) visited Bergstrom Air Force Base during a major USAF exercise. By sheer coincidence he again met up with Dale (now a Lieutenant) and his old RF4C - still operational but now sans the Carolina Kangaroo emblem.Black and Gold Framed Article of "The Blood Chit"- Accompanied with U.S.A. Flag and explanation. Also two coloured and one black and white photo of Alan Reed and Crew Chief Sgt. Dale Miller beside the RF-4C Phantom nicknamed, "Carolina Kangaroo".alan reed, rf-4c phantom, "carolina kangaroo"., sgt dale miller, united states air force, 12th tactical reconnaissance squadron -

In 1953 an major earthquake caused catastrophic damage across the islands of Ithaca and Cephalonia, which are part of Greece's Heptanesian group of islands located in the Ionian Sea. Many towns and villages were left uninhabitable and resulted in another wave of Ithacan migration to Australia. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society initiated an Earthquake Appeal which was generously supported by Melbourne's Ithacan community, all of whom were affected by the earthquakes in one way or another.A black and white photograph of damage caused by an earthquake. Camp Eureka Working Collective
scarf
The scarf was worn by Eileen Capocchi, a member of the Eureka Youth League Choir who sang at the Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship and donated the item. The planned event had been targeted by Prime Minister Menzies as a Communist Party activity. The Commonwealth Government pressured local Sydney Councils to deny the organisers a venue. These attempts failed. The event combined sporting, athletic and musical events at a football stadium. In later years it was the subject of two documentary films. The scarf is of historic and social significance because of its association with the Peace Carnival for Peace and Friendship of 1952 and the Eureka Youth League. The scarves were worn by all participants and by Eureka Youth League members in subsequent years. The scarf records some of the musical and sporting events organised by the Eureka Youth League in most major Australian cities.Brown and yellow square rayon machine edged scarf made for the 1952 Youth Carnival for Peace and Friendship in Sydney. Ampoule, Propofol, Biochemie Australia (Novartis)
Propofol is an induction agent for anaesthesia and also used in intensive care to induce unconsciousness. Propofol doesn't dissolve in water so it comes in a white, oily solution and must be refrigerated before it’s used. The solution consists of soybean oil, fats purified from egg yolks, and glycerol. Propofol is used as an “induction agent”—the drug that causes loss of consciousness— for general anaesthesia in major surgery. In lower doses it is also used for “conscious sedation” of patients getting procedures on an outpatient basis at ambulatory surgery centres. The main reason propofol is the agent of choice is because it allows for very rapid recovery, is the perfect drug for insertion of laryngeal masks and is the agent of choice for infusions. It has largely replaced thiopentone, the original drug of choice, but this is still available in Australia and used in specific situations. Propofol was linked to the death of Michael Jackson. Hobart was expecting, at any moment, counted battery fire from North Vietnamese coastal batteries after radar stations on Hainan Island, Near Haiphong Harbour and at Vinh had locked onto Horart's position with very accurate triangular positioning. Lt Masterton was informing Gibbons of the incoming enemy fire and was worried he (Gibbons) was not wearing a helment, gibbons, most respectfully advised Lt Masterton that he could not operate his cameras with a helmet on. Tool - LIster's Carbolic Spray, circa 1930's
The College’s spray was one of the first pieces of surgical memorabilia to come into the possession of the College. It had been used in the Listerian wards of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and was presented , along with some other artefacts, by James Hogarth Pringle in 1930. Joseph Lister (1827-1912) is known as a father of modern surgery. His methods of preventing infection were controversial in their time, but are today recognized as a major advance in the practice of surgery. Lister’s life and achievements are too well known to be recounted here. The definitive biography was written by his nephew, Sir Rickman Godlee (PRCSE 1911-13), and published in 1917. Douglas Guthrie gives an glimpse of Lister at work: “...He never wore a white gown and frequently did not even remove his coat, but simply rolled back his sleeves and turned up his coat collar to protect his starched collar from the cloud of carbolic spray in which he operated...” From advances in bacteriology, and discoveries by Robert Koch and others, it became increasingly evident that airborne bacteria were not a significant contributor to sepsis in surgical wounds. They also demonstrated that the body had its own defences against invading organisms, which were seriously compromised by the effects of the carbolic spray. Gradually the use of the spray was curtailed, Lister himself finally abandoning it in 1887. Lister performed the first antiseptic operation, the dressing and splintage of a compound fracture of the lower leg, in 1865. At this time he used carbolic solution by application, and dressings soaked in the solution. The spray was developed later, after many different methods, including carbolic and linseed oil putty, had been tried in order to reduce the harmful side-effects of undiluted carbolic acid. The steam spray was developed in 1869, and announced to the medical world in 1871. Lister’s purpose in adopting the spray was to kill airborne bacteria in the vicinity of the operation before they could reach the patient. It came to be used all over the world for many years. However, it had serious disadvantages, which even Lister acknowledged. The principal problem was the inhalation of carbolic vapour by everyone in the vicinity, including the patient and the operator. In addition, if the patient had been anæsthetized using chloroform, the gas lights decomposed the vapour into chlorine gas, making any procedure an ordeal of endurance. The spray consists of a steam boiler heated by a wick, a nozzle for the steam to escape, and a glass jar for the carbolic solution. Fuel for the wick is carried in a tank at the base. Valves regulate the pressure of the steam, and the nozzle is adjustable. The boiler is made of cast iron, the fittings are brass, and the handles are of wood. Empty, the apparatus weighs 8 lbs (3.2 kg). lister, carbolic spray, antiseptic -
