Souvenir, International Commonwealth Games Committee, Melbourne Commonwealth Games Queens Baton relay, 2006
The Queen's Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958. It symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth. On 14 March 2005 Her Majesty placed a message in the baton at Buckingham Palace, signalling the start of a journey of almost 180,000 kilometres. The baton's journey to the opening ceremony took exactly one year and one day, arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006. It was the first baton relay to visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth. Athletes and non-athletes alike shared the privilege of carrying the baton. In Bendigo two sites were chosen for events. Bendigo Stadium: Basketball and Wellsford Rifle Range: Full Bore Shooting.Baton in display box. Reproduction of actual object. Front panel has 36 inserts, base is narrower than top. Queens message button near top which unlike the original is not removable. Top is gold coloured, back is dark green. Drawing - Property Illustration, Margaret Picken, 2/8 Hartwood Street, Kew East, 2006
After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2006. Each work is signed and dated by the artist.Gift of Margaret Picken, 2020Pen and ink drawing on drafting film of 2/8 Hartwood Street, Kew East by Margaret Picken.2/8 HARTWOOD ST., KEW E / MARG PICKEN 2006 / SHARPART - RAY WHITEartist -- margaret picken 1950-, 2/8 hartwood street -- kew east (vic.), property illustrations -- buildings -- kew east (vic.) -

Album - Photograph Album, John Chapman, Greenkeeping, at Kew Heights Sports Club, 2006
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Photographic album compiled by John Chapman in 2006 detailing the history of the Bowling Greens at Kew Heights Sports Club. In the opening pages (photographed for this record), he lists the history of the greens and the greenskeepers. This information includes details of the Jackett Green (1904, 1974), the West Green (1956/1961), and the Doug Stride Green (1979)GREENKEEPING AT KEW HEIGHTS SPORTS CLUB / COMPILED BY JOHN CHAPMAN WITH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FROM ADRIAN RIGG JUNE 2006kew heights sports club - 397 barkers road - kew (vic), bowling greens - history - kew (vic) -
