The Mission Rescue and Children's Home Canadian opened on Friday November 22, 1907. The formal opening at 3pm was conducted by the Mayor of Ballarat City Councillor F. Brawn with Hon David Ham to preside. The Hon Alfred Deakin gave an address. The Town Mission was established in Ballarat East by a group of Wesleyans. Ballarat Teachers College commenced in 1926 with 61 students with the aim of providing trained teachers for rural schools. It initially operated from the Dana Street Primary School while the Ballarat East Town Hall was renovated for the colleges use. Provides information about the two-day enquiry held by the Victorian Transport Regulation board into the SEC operated Ballarat Tramway system. Enquiry held at the Ballarat Court House, by Messrs J Bolster, E V Field (Chairman) and J O Mactier of the TRB. Two photos show the Board and some of the attendees. Page 2 of the 3 April report; the acting assistant manager of the SEC advised that the tramway was unsafe, deaths due to collisions with trams, costs of refurbishing the tracks and tramcars and employment issues. Evidence was also given by the Mayor of Ballarat, Cr. Nicholson, Ballarat Town Clerk Mr Maddern, Barry Wilkins, H A Davis local bus operators. The Board considered whether the existing services could be replaced by private operators, or a publicly operated service, including the cost of operators. Also submissions from Mr O'Shea of the ATOMEA, Ballarat Trams and Labor Council, and Chamber of Manufacturers. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of a woman dressed in a hat, skirt and jacket, holding gloves and a fur stole. In 1884 the Ballarat School of Mines Council reserved a three acre site on a spur of the White horse Ranges known as Mount Pleasant. The Vice-President of the Ballarat School of Mines, James Oddie undertook at his own expense (said to be 4,000 pounds) to erect and equip the observatory. By 1886 seven rooms, a workshop and a cottage had been erected. The first large telescope built in Australia, the Baker Telescope, opened 1888. In 1913 the Council of the Ballarat School of Mines handed over the Observatory to the Ballarat East Town Council. A number of images as depicted in a newspaper. The collection contains approximately 200 photographs of Ballarat and district in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, as well as photo albums, glass negatives and other memorabilia. Herb Richmond was a keen photographer, a foundation member and a life member of the Ballarat Camera Club, and a photographer with the Ballarat Courier during the 1940s. The Ballarat Camera Club named an annual award after him. Mr Richmond died in 1981 aged 79. These images were digitally re-photographed by members of the Ballarat Camera Club in September 2006. This building housed the original Ballarat Public Library. Sir Redmond Barry laid the foundation stone in 1867.
