The “Northrop” is an American copy of the “Zogling” which was designed in Germany in the 1920s as a training glider. Apparently, the Northrop primary glider takes its name from a Marvin Northrop of Minneapolis who imported a Zogling from Germany and from that glider had plans drawn and published in a magazine called Modern Mechanics in 1930. The Australia Gliding Museum’s Northrop was built over the period of 1970 to 1974. The project was conceived by a pioneer of Australian gliding, Ken Davies, about 1969, as a hobby project and to experience afresh gliding flight of the early years. By that time, few primary gliders, which performed a fundamental role for gliding clubs in the 1930s and 1940s, remained in Australia. Ken began construction and was helped to finish the project by two old time Gliding Club of Victoria members, Dave Darbyshire and Rudi Feil. The glider was test flown on 8 March 1975 at Benalla. The glider was stored at the Gliding Club of Victoria and flown on special occasions in the 1980s. Later it was damaged at the 1996 vintage glider rally at Ararat as a result of a heavy landing. Storage was then provided for the glider by the Victorian Motorless Flight Group at Bacchus Marsh until it was returned to Dave Darbyshire for restoration in 1998. Fully restored, the glider was donated by Iris Davies and Dave Darbyshire to the Australian Gliding Museum in April 2001. This exhibit is the type of machine that formed the basis of the sport of gliding from 1929 to about 1945. The glider consists of an open (uncovered) wooden framed fuselage (painted blue) with a brown vinyl covered seat, fabric covered wooden framed wings of constant chord (painted silver) with provision for attachment of semi-circular cane wing skids, and fabric covered wooden framed tailplane, elevators and rudder (painted silver). This is a set of 25 colour photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour Victoria in 1983. The 26th item is a A4 paper document detailing the history of Fortuna Football Club from 1978 to 1993. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager). Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. Dad & Dave Cafe was located in Pall Mall Charing Cross Bendigo. It was opened by dairy farmer and milk bar owner Les McClure in 1939. His Four'n Twenty meat pies were initially made in Bendigo in 1947. McClure sold his Four'n Twenty Pie's Pty. Ltd. to Peters Ice Cream (VIC) Ltd. in 1960.A cream coloured jug with green decorative trim and McClures on it. Its ten centimetres high, eight and half centimetres diameter at its base six centimetres at the top with a small spout. William Ross (1868-1957) was editor of S.R.M. for many years. He was also a talented musician, Presbyterian church organist. Married Jessie Gray. Brought up Jean,Les, Dave, Keith Gray.Since 1890 the Snowy River Mail has been the local newspaper of the Orbost district.This local paper has been the means by which readers in Orbost were able to learn about newsworthy events and issues in their local community for over a centuryLarge round carved wood and leather arm chair on metal swivel.
