The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. Parker Family - Samuel Skelton Parker, Jack Parker’s father, migrated to Australia from Ballymena, Country Antrim, Ireland in 1884. He married Bridget Cusack from County Clare in 1883. They had children William, James, Jack, Samuel and Rachel. After working on a station in northern NSW, they moved to Barnawartha and set up a butchery and later a bakery. In 1890 the family moved to Wodonga, buying a property in West Wodonga, which he called “Park Hall” after his home in Ireland. The property is now the location of the Wodonga Golf Club in Parkers Road, West Wodonga.This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. This silver tray was donated by the family of John Watson and was used when they lived in de Kerilleau Homestead for three generations. de Kerilleau Homestead was built for William Huon, son of the early pastoralist Paul Huon, in 1870 and named after the family's ancestral estate in France. The original lease of the Wodonga Run was granted to Paul Huon as No. 202 on 7th February 1837, about a year after his cousin Charles Huon had squatted on the land. Kenneth Darnton Watson bought de Kerilleau homestead in 1922 where the Watson family lived for three generations, caring for the land and serving the Wodonga community. Kenneth, his son Ian Darnton Watson and his grandson John Kenneth Darnton Watson all served on the Wodonga Council. John Kenneth Darnton Watson was born on 28 August 1960 in Wodonga. After completing his primary schooling locally, he boarded at Geelong College from 1973. John joined the rowing crews, starting in the 8th VIII crew and reaching the 1st VIII crew in 1978. He received multiple House colours awards for cross country, athletics and rowing and received School colours for rowing. On completion of his schooling, John spent some time jackarooing before studying farm management at Marcus Oldham College in Geelong, Victoria. He then returned home to de Kerilleau, Wodonga to manage the family property. In 1984 John married Christine Honybun, daughter of David Lewis Honybun and Marian Josephine Edkins. John and Christine had three sons. John was community minded and involved in a number of local organisations such as Apex and agricultural societies. He was elected to Wodonga City Council in 1997, serving until 2004. Due to increased pressure on available land to cater for the growth of Wodonga, some of the property was sold and in 2003 John donated 200 ha of Huon Hill‘s western slopes to the City of Wodonga. After this time, he moved away from farming to become a Hungry Jack's franchisee. In 2009, the hard decision was made to sell de Kerilleau and John and his family moved into Wodonga. After sadly losing Christine to cancer in 2017, John became a member and Deputy Chairperson of the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Board and Ambassador for the Sunshine Walk. The early forties saw rapid growth of Bogong Village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the families of employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed circa 1970.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1966 on the death of Legatee Syd Birrell. He joined Legacy in 1924 and was very active contact work, welfare and probation work. It says: "It is doubtful that any other Legatee has performed more personal contact service in the homes of our families than has Syd. There are literally hundreds of widows and children in this community who have reason to be eternally grateful for the practical Legacy service he had rendered. He will be greatly missed in very many homes." Syd Birrell was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1949 and helped established at least 10 new Legacy groups in Gippsland and in northern Victoria. In World War One he had served with the 37th Infantry Battalion, winning an MC for bravery at the battle of Broodseinde in Belgium on 4 October 1917. In the Second World War he served as Captain in the VDC. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The photo is of a brick residence, built in 1865-66 as a house and surgery for Dr. Rae, a medical practitioner in Bacchus Marsh 1863-1874. Dr. Rae was influential in community affairs as a Justice of the Peace, a member of the Board of Advice of Bacchus Marsh Common School and a President of the Mechanics’ Institute. After ill health forced him to resign his practice, he built the Bungalow in 1880, where he lived until his death. The house was later purchased by William Anderson (c.1880) who named it “Dunglass”. The people in this photograph are probably members of the Anderson family. The house is now used as an Adult Education Centre. The house is of significance as the embodiment of the importance to the community of its influential figures, such as Dr. Rae, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The photo is of a double-fronted brick Classical nineteenth century house with a high hip roof. Two brick chimneys are visible. The left hand bay is set forward, with the central section of the house being set back. A concave return verandah supported by decorative columns runs along the front and side of the house, leading to a separate entry door off the side verandah. On the window set in this door, the word ‘SURGERY’ can be discerned, indicating that this is the entrance to be used by patients. The building features buff-coloured stone quoins and architraves. A white picket fence runs along the front. Ranged along the footpath in front of the fence stands a group of eight young women and girls. This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family.This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. The cover is brown with gold lettering and the image of a lion on the front cover and a scroll pattern on the spine. The book has a preface, 41 chapters and an index. There are eight colour plates scattered throughout the text. The book plate on the first page is printed and pasted in and it has typed material added to it. Another inscription has been handwritten in pencil. There are also several notes and quotations handwritten in pencil on the back page. A typical leisure activity for children of this era was a doll's tea party. The Methodist Children's Home in Cheltenham was founded c1880 to provide housing for neglected children from the inner city. The Founders aimed to provide regular nourishment, a stable environment and integrate the children into the local community thereby improving their education and lives. However new settlers to Cheltenham area who were seeking a healthier and more respectable lifestyle for their families were not happy to share Church and School with the Home's Children. (see 00561) 1950's saw a new direction for the support of children and families in poor and difficult situations . The new Burwood Homes Facility opened in 1951 and children were transferred from Cheltenham in 1952. The land was sold to the St John of God, Catholic Order in1953 who maintained an orphanage until Myer Pty Ltd bought the site in 1967 and constructed the Southland Shopping Centre c1892-1953 The Methodist Children's Home Cheltenham was founded to provide safe accommodation and education for neglected children from the inner city slums. This plaque commemorates the official opening of an occasional child care centre and pre-school in South St, Wodonga in 1989 by the Governor of Victoria Dr. Davis McCaughey. With strong population growth in Wodonga community services had expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s. The first child minding centre had opened in 1975. BY 1987 Upper Murray Family Care provided full-day family day care and occasional care and there were also 2 private child care centres. By 1986 there were 350 full-time places and 75 part-time places, but pre-schools were unable to fill the demand for another 511 applicants. This new facility helped to ease a little of the problem. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s.| This sewing machine belonged to Isla Ilma Margaret Ernestine neeTasker, mother of Alfred Haeusler. Singer was first established as I. M. Singer & Co. in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer with New York lawyer Edward C. Clark. Best known for its sewing machines, it was renamed Singer Manufacturing Company in 1865, then the Singer Company in 1963. The Singer company began to market its machines internationally in 1855 and won first prize at the Paris world's fair that year. They had offices established in both Sydney and Melbourne by the mid-1960s. The company demonstrated the first workable electric sewing machine in 1910. Singer was also a marketing innovator and a pioneer in promoting the use of instalment payment plans, making their machines more affordable for many people. This item is from the Hauseler Collection which documents social life of early settlers in the Wodonga community.Singer "Coffin top" treadle sewing machine with extension table. The machine is mainly black and silver metal but is extensively decorated with coloured decals. The decorations on this machine features a pheasant design which also helps to date the machine as it was only used from 1890 to 1915. The sewing machine is set into a wooden table with and extension leaf and 6 drawers, 3 on either side. The frame and treadle mechanism are iron with a thin leather belt to drive the mechanism. The "coffin" shaped top sits over the machine to protect it when not in use and is easily removed. The extension leaf provides a larger working surface and folds down when not in use. 1988: 12 November. “Bush Nursing” Our float in the Eltham Community Festival Parade won the award for the best display for the second year running. We received a trophy donated by the Billabong Family Bistro, Lower Plenty. The theme of the float was the Eltham Bush Nursing Hospital. The float was prepared by Bruce Ness with some help from other members. A number of members contributed with costumes and other props. Hospital equipment was kindly loaned by the Judge Book Village. As with previous parades members of the Victorian Folk Music Club joined us, their music providing a welcome addition to the float. Dora Walker (married 1928 taking the name Simpson) had a long association with the Mission as a member of the Ladies Harbour light guild. This image is similar to another image in the collection which depicts the garden of the Walker family where many fund-raising events and hosting of seafarers took place. Rev Weller dates the image to around mid to late 1920s. In the 1960s and 70s Dora was president of the LHLG which later merged with the Flying Angels. She was awarded the MBE for her services to the community in the 1970s. Dora's son David Simpson is a volunteer still iat MTS n the 21stC. The Walker and Simpson families are examples of long association and commitment supporting the Mission to Seafarers. As they are researched it is clear the stories of these families document not only support for the Mission but are also shown to have been significant contributors, leaders and donors to the broader Melbourne and Victorian community from the 19th Century and up to the present day. The word "apron" comes from the old French word "naperon" which means a napkin or small tablecloth. This apron is one of two similar aprons that were donated from the estate of Susan Henry nee Vedmore (1944 - 2021). It is in very good condition and appears to be more decorative (and possibly used only on special occasions) rather than everyday wear. Susan's family (Harold and Gladys Vedmore) immigrated to Australia from Wales in 1955 and settled in Warrnambool. Susan was well known in the Warrnambool community for her work supporting children and families across the district - particular those with disabilities, or those who were homeless, unemployed or isolated. Susan was the founding trustee of the "Vedmore Foundation" - a Warrnambool philanthropic trust set up in 2010 to support a range of charitable and not-for-profit causes by providing grant assistance. This doll's pram was owned by the daughter of Dr William Roy Angus and his wife Gladys when the family came to Warrnambool in the late 1930s. It is part of the W.R. Angus collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, surgeon and oculist. The W R Angus Collection spans the years 1885 to the mid-1900s and includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the responsibility of part-time Port Medical Officer and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This doll's pram is connected to the history of Warrnambool, as it was owned by the daughter of Dr W. R. Angus and his wife Gladys, and is part of the W.R. Angus Collection, which is important for still being located at the site connected to Doctor Angus, Warrnambool’s last Port Medical Officer. Dr Angus and his wife brought their young family to Warrnambool in 1939 and he remained a resident until his death in 1970. Early in his profession in the town of Nhill, Dr Angus assisted Dr Tom Ryan in his pioneering use of X-rays and in ocular surgery, and Dr Angus later inherited these items. The W.R. Angus Collection includes these medical instruments and other related equipment and is culturally and historically significant as an example of the medical practice of the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Other items in the collection relate to Dr Angus’ service in the Flying Doctor Service and the Army.Pram has a folding blue vinyl hood and a rectangular, white wicker base with curved corners at the bottom. The base and hood are lined with white vinyl. The wheels have eight spokes and black rubber tyres. The curved handle has a metal bard the width of the pram, which is covered in a white rubber tube. The handle sides are joined to two curved flat bars that extend in an outwards curve away from the pram. The Hood is hinged to flip from the back to the front of the pram and is designed to can fold. The undercarriage has suspension springs. The pram is part of the W.R. It was part of the original Tooram run which was taken up in 1839/40 by John McMahon Allan. Allan held the property until 1860 after which it passed through several owners including John Orlebar, Thomas McLeod Palmer, Owen family. Tooram was famous for the cheese from its large dairy herd. The herd was hand-milked. Palmer employed Indian labour to undertake this task. In 1883 Palmer was charged with the manslaughter of an Indian worker but was acquitted. This case was extensively reported in the Warrnambool Standard. The Standard also featured a number of articles about Tooram [22 June 1882, 17 March 1883 to 15 May 1993, 30 October 1886, 22 October 1897, 11 May 1926, 8 June 1931]. The property remained in the Uebergang family until after Joyce's death in 1992. Tooram is significant as it was one of the earliest runs taken up in the Warrnambool area. It was divided up following its sale in 1897. Tooram cheese was renowned. As with many rural families the Uebergangs had bulk fuel supplies on-farm. The bowser was used to refuel farm machinery. Mobil's Super Plume petrol was one of the many brands of petrol available from the late 1920s. No electricity was required to work this bowser as it was gravity fed. The amount of petrol was selected by the position of the front lever. Petrol was then pumped into the bowl by the handle on the side of the bowser and gravity=fed to the vehicle.
