Front of the bodice extends in wide 8 cms wide straps, which cross over at the back, and fasten with a button and buttonhole to the back waistband. The skirt of the apron extends right around the body, and overlaps, and fastens with two buttons and buttonholes 14 cms overlap. Three piece skirt, lightly gathered at back, adjoins a 4.5 cm waistband, and bib front which has broad shoulder straps 8.5 cms wide which cross at the back, and button to the waistband, leaving a 10 cm long rounded tab finished end. No buttons evident, which probably suggests removable buttons, fastened with safety pins, or "hair clip" type fasteners. Bib front extends into broad shoulder straps 8 cm wide, at shoulder, tapering to 7 cm wide rounded tab ends, which cross at the back, and button to the waist band. Two plastic buttons- 1.5 cm diameter, one on the tab strap, and one on the waist band, are both damaged-possibly due to harsh laundry conditions. The seam is then covered by white cotton tape, machine stitched over the seam, to neaten the join. Shaped peplum dipping to V shape on either side of front opening and on either side of centre back. Padded shoulders. Front has 15 cm darts from each shoulder seam. Three quarter length sleeves shaped at end by three darts. Wide square neckline, and square yoke of crochet extending into short crocheted sleeves. A seven cm deep peplum has a cotton casing and cotton tape drawstring. The front opening has three hand-stitched button holes, and two pearl shell buttons( third is missing). Rows of 1.5cm cotton lace run horizontally at top and bottom of yoke, with three rows - one at each edge, and one in centre of sleeves. Wide neckline, rounded at the back, and a deep V shaped front. Short sleeves, edged with a one cm band of scalloped edge lace. This edging also trims the back neckline. Front neckline is trimmed with six cm deep scalloped edge, broiderie anglaise, featuring an embroidered floral design, and cutwork. A casing at the waistline, one cm wide, appears to contain elastic, which is now perished. Deep round neck, front and back. Sleeveless. Armholes edged wit a two cm band of lace, featuring a diamond shaped geometric design. Lace is spoke stitched to the garment, and has a scalloped edge finish. Two bands of the lace edge - one 2.5cm wide, and one three cm wide. Where they are stitched together, a drawstring of stranded cotton enables the neckline to be gathered in. The lace is spoke-stitched to the fabric, and inserts in circular loops (2) and oval inserts (3) decorate the back across the bustling. One circular shape and two oval shapes decorate the back across the shoulders. Fine, machine stitched, french seams at side seams. Two 2cm cotton fabric covered buttons close the waistband of the drawers, at the centre front. A 33cm wide gathered panel at the centre front, fastens to the waistband with two 1.5cm plastic buttons-(possibly replacement for original buttons). This gathered panel may suggest that these drawers were worn during a pregnancy. The 75cm long legs are trimmed with two bands of floral embroidered, and cutwork lace-eight cm deep lace. waistband is 6.5cm deep. White cotton, with fine crochet and needle woven lace 9possibly machine made) and pink satin ribbon insertion - seven cm wide waistband fastens at the centre front with two 1.5cm covered buttons. A gathered centre panel fastens over the centre of the waistband with two 1.5cm covered buttons. Two darts at either side of centre back seam, and a slight - .5cm shaping at back waistband, provide shaping, and a smooth backline. All edges (except hemline) ie sleeves, and centre front, including neck edge, are finished in perle thread, buttonhole stitched two cm wide scallops. Satin stitch, and cut work embroidery, in a floral design, are on the lower edge of the short sleeves and on the front bodice.The waistline has a four cm wide band of ribbon, in an insertion design,- but there is no ribbon insertion evident. This would be the only form of closure, from the waistline a slightly gathered panel,22cm deep, gives a peplum effect. Hemline is faced with a 1.7cm wide cotton facing. The ribbon insertion panel has alternating 1.2cm wide floral embroidered ribbon and one cm wide plain ribbon. Magyer sleeves-extending from the side seam just above the waistline - bodice all one piece of fabric - no seams.Accompaning note - No date. The bloomers (11400.931), belonged to Antoinette Catling of Bendigo and were part of her trousseaux. They would be 80+ years old. Fine white cotton, with a drawstring in a 1.5xcm deep casing around the waistline. Completely opened at centre front, through crotch, and up the centre back to within 14cm of the waistline. One dart on either side of front, and two darts on either side of back. Machine stitched. A 2.5cm wide cotton lace is inset into a zig zag pattern around each leg. In each V shape a 1.5cm lace insert in a fan,under the V shapes are inserted needle woven bows, shape is inserted. Seven extremely fine pin tucks border the edge of the legs, which have a three cm wide lace edging. Split drawers were worn in the era when women wore corsets. The split front and back allowed women to go to the toilet, as the corsets could not be removed to allow for an act of nature.Accompanying note - No date. Fine, soft silk, woven with a two mm spot, spaced at one cm all over the fabric.Above the wrist-length sleeves finished with a six cm wide black velvet cuff. Sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and the cuff. A 26cm long ''over -sleeve'' is gathered at the shoulder, and edged with two bands of black velvet-one of .8 of 1cm, and one 2cm wide. Bodice has a 6.5cm stand-up mandarin style collar, which is boned in three places. Three metal hooks, and embroidered eyelets fasten the collar - (2 damaged). The shoulder line has 12 pintucks, 20 cm long, and finishing to give fullness to the bustline. Six pintucks either side of back opening. Over the shoulders is a loose panel - 25cm wide at the shoulder, tapering to 7.5cm wide at the waistline - five bands of velvet taper from shoulder to waistline, emphasing a V shape, from shoulders to narrow waist. A 17cm deep panel of pintucking extends from shoulders at front and back. Six X 4cm deep tucks extend from the pintucks to the waistline.costume, female, victorian black silk and velvet bodice

High round neckline, edged with 1.5cm wide lace. Centre front panel is pintucked with a centre front opening, fastened with ten metal hook and eye fasteners. Five metal press-studs also fasten the overlap of pintucks, but these are possibly a later addition. A 3.5cm wide panel of fine watermark silk defines the waistline, in three 1.5cm pleats. Centre back seam has one .5cm flat pleat or tuck on either side. A 5.5cm panel of fabric is overlaid with a net based, beaded braid, of small black jet beads in a floral design-This braid extends around the neckline, and down each side of the front to below the bustline. This beading is also sewn of the eight cm wide sleeve cuffs. A cream crochet collar-most likely a later addition, is now stitched over the beading around the neckline. Cream silk satin bodice, with a high round neckline, finished with a seven cm deep, cream lace, boned, mandarin stand up collar - five bones-(one missing) to support the collar. Nine 16cm bones support the shaping of the tapered firmly fitted waist. A ten cm deep yoke at front and back shoulders. Below the yoke is a panel of eleven cm long pintucks right across the front, and on either side of the back. Centre front gathers into a cotton tape band at the waistline. Below the neckline of the centre front, is a panel ten cm deep of cotton lace, then a 13cm deep fine silk, gathered frill, edged with a reinforced silk ruffle. The centre back opening has a double placket, each fastening with alternate hook and eye,hook on either side of opening. Two large hooks facilitate a joining with a skirt.The three quarter length satin sleeves, are a bell shape, and gather into a cream net, eight cm deep band, which fastens with two metal hooks and hand made loops. Over the net is a double frill, 13 cm deep, and edged with a reinforced silk ruffle, as in the centre front panel. This bishop-type sleeve has five X 12cm long pintucks at the shoulderline. A ten cm long row of a feather stitch type of hand embroidery on either side of front bodice-one each side of the gathered centre front panel. Silk, satin, fully lined with silk (?). Eleven bones, ranging in length from 10 - 12 cm long, taper the bodice to the waistline. 15cm wide panels of beaded net come from the high back waistband, over the shoulder to the front waistband. These are loose panels with linear beading, and more decorative beading over the shoulders. Centre front panel has a net overlay, sheer above the bustline to the throat, with a 16cm high net stand-up, mandarin collar, edged in lace, and outlined at the throat with a row of tiny jet beads. Cotton perspiration pads under the arms.A beaded '' butterfly'' shape sits over the bustline where the sheer lace panel begins. Below the beaded motif, five roulet knotted and loops fasten into the finest of metal loops to close the bodice. Silk ''over -sleeves'' also have three roulet looped decorations at each edge. Below the elbow length ''over sleeves'', a double layer of net sleeves-the top layer finished with seven rows of tiny jet beads, the lower wrist length net sleeve, finished wit one row of tiny jet beads, and a two cm net fill. Beading and an embroidered ribbon flower trim the back centre net panel, and a roulet looped trim, sits at the centre back waistline. An extension of the beaded over -the-shoulder panels falls in a rectangular shape 38cm X 23cm. The front extension of the ''over the shoulder'' beaded net, falls in two oval shapes - one either side of opening 24cms long. Front has a V-shaped panel inserted from the right hemline, and back has an identical panel at left hemline. French side seams, machine stitched. Hemline bound as for neckline. Clothing.Woman's black silk blouse. Bodice is made up of two layers. Inner layer of black cotton has full length front opening with placket with five buttons and button holes from 5cm below round neckline to 5cm above the waist. There is a breast pocket on the LHS (14cm X 11cm). The outer layer of black silk is attached to the inner layer at the shoulders (pleated) and around the arm holes, and hand stitched at the lower back to form a casing for cotton tape ties. The front forms a full width crossover with one metal hook on top LHS. The outer layer extends 7 cm below the inner layer at the waist with a 7cm peplum across the back. Set in long sleeves are tapered at the wrist with a 5 cm frill at the hem. Sleeves fully lined. Hand and machine stitched. Casings reinforced with bright yellow cotton stitching. Cotton tape casing at hemline at waist. Long straight set in sleeves extending to a rounded shape over the back of the hand.Cross over front outer layer fastened with three hooks and eyes at the top and one at the waist. Panels of black lace run from shoulders to waist on either side of a centre insert panel (12 cm X 15cm) with five horizontal strips of velvet ribbon. Below the insert are three 7-9cm wide black lace ruffles with khaki green embroidery (Jabot effect). The back has a deep V shaped insert of vertical pin tucks and black lace, from across the shoulders to centre back. Clothing. Woman's black ribbed silk bodice, fully ;lined with black cotton fabric. High round neckline with stand up lined lace collar (4cm), fastened left of centre at front with two metal hooks and eyes. Front lining fastened with twelve metal hooks and eyes from throat to waistband. Waistband (5.5cm) of horizontal pleated fabric. Small pocket (8cm X 6cm) attached to inside lining on LHS. Waistband has 7 cm cross over tab section at centre front fastened with three metal hooks and eyes. Centre front opening is edged with black lace and tucked spotted voile, fastened with three metal hooks and eyes.A wide shawl collar across the shoulders extends and gathers into the waistband at front and back. This forms a V shaped opening at the front exposing the lace and voile beneath.The inner and outer edges of the collars have decorative knots. The centre of the collars have 18cm pin tucks from the shoulder seam at the front and 11 cm pin tucks at the back.At centre back. a panel of black lace runs from the collar to the hem of the waistband. Two gathered fabric tails are attached at centre back to hang below the hem of the waistband. Decorative lace as stitched across the shawl collar at the shoulders seams, ending with a decorative knot and cotton tassell (7cm). Set in Leg 'o'Mutton sleeves are gathered around the arm holes and gathered into a band of fabric with decorative lace and knots. The narrow lower section has a turned over hem edged with decorative knots and black lace. Each sleeve has a 5cm slit at the wrist. The bodice has fifteen bone casings spaced across the garment, from the waistband. These are stitched in place with yellow cotton. Some internal seams finished with yellow cotton. Hand stitched. Word ''GLEN" is written on one bone casing. Temporary darts have been stitched on both side seams with red cotton to reduce the size.costume, female, woman's black ribbed silk bodice.

The dress was made by Miss Mary Ryan, a pupil at Lilydale Convent (now Mt Lilydale College) in 1902. It was worn to the Annual Empire Day Celebrations in Lilydale. Accompanying photo shows dress worn by Monica Ryan (no. 5089). The outfit also includes two hand made pockets for handkerchiefs and ties (nos. 735 & 736) Empire Day Dress; Cream silk, cotton lined, embroidered with kangaroos and emu holding shield, with Southern Cross stars above rising sun emblem. Banner below reads 'Advance Australia', embriodered with silk and cotton thread; also gold metalic braiding.
