Handwritten notes on the chimneys of some of Bendigo's mines. Some were designed on Cleopatra's Needle which is situated on the Thames Embankment in London. Others had flags, horizontal bands, letters or initials in coloured bricks. The 180 mine stack had a pyramid built on the top with a hole on each side placed there as vents for the smoke which issued from them according to the wind. Today none of these chimneys remain. Copy of 3 page hand written document by Albert Richardson. Written on top of page one: 'Mining Report Historical Society 6.7.67. Historical Records of Bendigo Mines' which outlines a project undertaken by Albert and the Historical Society to write a description of each Bendigo mine, showing location, plant, gold gained, depth of shaft etc. The objective was to publish this information in a book for 'educational and historical purpose'. The paper further describes a public meeting to outline the BHS proposal to 'preserve a gold mine with all equipment both surface and underground, a crushing battery, a windlass, a whip and a whim to be stored, as as far as possible in correct position. For tourists, local residents and educational purposes this should illustrate what Bendigo workers in Bendigo foundries and Bendigo citizens generally, achieved in making this city a world famous gold mining centre. GEOLOGICAL MAP - BENDIGO GOLD FIELDS - Donated by JOHN HORWOOD. Two geological maps of the Bendigo Gold fields. The maps display , reef lines, Hills, Dams and mine locations. Also Anticlines, sinclines, shafts, alluvial deposits, contours and gullys. All items are superimposed on a map of the major roads and streets of Bendigo. The maps were printed by The Victorian Minister for Mines in 1923 and re-issued in 1936. The maps have been specifically framed and donated to The Bendigo Historical Society Inc. in May 2015 for display at Specimen Cottage. John had been a student at The School of Mines- Bendigo and found them useful as a student living in Bendigo. Prior to being framed , the maps have been kept rolled up in his home. Accession Number 309/15 Were on Display at Specimen Cottage 2015 - 2020. After all items removed from SC to the BRAC in 2021 the framed maps could not be located. Search ongoing. Light brown covered booklet 'Bulletins of the Geological Survey of Victoria issued by W Dickson, Secretary for Mines, Under the Authority of the Hon. S Barnes M L A Minister of Mines. No 41 The Confidence Group of Mines, Bendigo with Plans and Sections by H S Whitelaw, Field Geologist, dated 1918. Mines mentioned are: Confidence Extended Mine, Confidence Tribute Company and the Central Windmill Hill Mine. Newspaper article: 'Years in the Mines". Article details the life of an Eaglehawk man who spent 22 years working in Bendigo mines and who is celebrating his 80th birthday ( no date on article) Wilfred worked at the Unity Mine in Long Guly, when the Prince of Wales, visited it. He also worked at the Red White and Blue, Big Deborah and South Virginia (between 1920 and 1942) He stated worked as a shoveler and then learnt to bore holes and fire with explosives. At the South Virginia, there were three shifts working the shaft. Each shaft shift had two miners and one shoveller and the mine has 20 or 30 workers.bendigo, mining, wilfred watsobn
