This vital fundraiser event was held at Lady Fraser's house, opened by Lady Forster and featured in respective issues of Punch and Table talk , October 12th 1922. Also reported in the Argus on Monday 9th of October 1922.The event raised important funds towards the costs of opening the Dome Gymnasium at the 717 Flinders St Mission to Seafarers. The building became known eventually as the 'Norla Dome Gymnasium". The Mayor's room was traditionally a private space in which the Mayor met with visitors and official guests. The signatures in this Visitor's Book reflect the breadth of community members who were received by Mayor's throughout the 20th century. From local people to overseas dignitaries their signatures are recorded for prosperity as evidence of their visit to Bendigo. Signatures include the Duchess and Duke of York (Later the King and Queen of England) who visited on the 28th April 1927 as part of their national visit which coincided with the opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Royals Prince Charles and Lady Diana signed the book on the April 15th, 1983 and Prime Minister John Howard and Members of Cabinet in 1998. Large tan leather and green cloth bound book. 390 lined pages each with three ruled vertical columns titled; Name, Address, Remarks. Marbled front and back end papers. Pages numbered top left or right of each page. Front end page has a small pink piece of paper pasted in centre with makers name and address on it. On the 2nd of December 1978, the official opening of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria's new headquarters, Action House, was held in conjunction with the inaugural Christmas fete. Action House was located on the grounds of the Royal Talbot Hospital in Kew. In this photo, Cr John H Gervasoni (1929-1992), Mayor of Kew, addresses the crowd the veranda of Action House. Seated behind him are Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006) and Mrs Kathleen Gervasoni, Mayoress of Kew, among others (partially obscured). An article pertaining to the event (along with several other photos) appears on page 1 (the cover page) and page 3 of the Vol. 11, December 1978 issue of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria's quarterly newsletter, News Review. In the article, it is reported that the Mayor, Cr. Gervasoni, unveiled the plaque and officially opened Action House, while the Mayoress, Mrs. Gervasoni, officially opened the fete and Christmas Family Fun Day. The Queen's Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain-raiser to the Commonwealth Games since 1958. It symbolises the gathering of people from across the Commonwealth. On 14 March 2005 Her Majesty placed a message in the baton at Buckingham Palace, signalling the start of a journey of almost 180,000 kilometres. The baton's journey to the opening ceremony took exactly one year and one day, arriving at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006. It was the first baton relay to visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth. Athletes and non-athletes alike shared the privilege of carrying the baton. In Bendigo two sites were chosen for events. Peter Morley was elected to Council in 1987 and served as Mayor from 1989 - 1990. He was a supporter of restoration of the Town Hall and its use for council meetings as well as the Capital Theatre Project. In the years prior to adequate compensation for Mayors who have a hectic schedule Peter Morley who was in his early 30's when serving as Mayor noted that his own finances where impacted due to taking time off from work (as a plumber) and making financial contributions to attend events. The Band Rotunda was officially opened on Sunday 5th September 1920 at the naming of the triangular reserve as Woodland Grove at the corner of High and Hovell Streets. The Wodonga Band gave a public performance on this occasion. The tri-coloured ribbon, which stretched across the entrance to the Rotunda was cut by Mrs R. H. Murphy, daughter of Mr John Woodland, Secretary of the Wodonga Shire Council for 35 years, after whom the area was named. The rotunda has since been moved to Martin Park, Wodonga. This image is one of a collection of photos taken by Robert Prentice.
